Ismael \u201cEl Mayo\u201d Zambada will appear in a U.S. court on Monday, where he is expected to be sentenced to life in prison after last year he pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute millions of kilograms of cocaine over decades as the head of the Sinaloa Cartel.<\/p>\n
Zambada, 76, agreed to plead guilty in August 2025 to charges of conspiracy to participate in organized crime and continuing a criminal enterprise after the Department of Justice said it would not seek the death penalty. Such charges carried a mandatory life sentence.<\/p>\n
U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan in Brooklyn will hold the sentencing hearing in Brooklyn federal court, which is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. local time (14:30 GMT).<\/p>\n
Zambada was arrested in July 2024 along with Joaqu\u00edn Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez, one of the sons of the late Joaqu\u00edn \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzm\u00e1n, after their plane landed on a small airstrip in New Mexico. Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez later pleaded guilty in connection with drug trafficking.<\/p>\n
The defense attorney for Zambada, Frank Perez, in a motion filed on July 6 stated that his client fully understood that he would receive a life sentence when he agreed to take responsibility for the crimes. Perez asked Cogan to recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that the 76-year-old client be placed in a facility where he would receive proper medical care.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors from the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office noted that the prisons proposed by Perez may not be prepared to provide the necessary level of security due to the possibility of continued cartel activity from within the prison.<\/p>\n
These safety concerns are likely to persist for the foreseeable future, as individuals loyal to the defendant continue to control the cartel.<\/p>\n
