(NEW YORK) \u2014 A man with an alleged history of anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity set off an \u201cincendiary device\u201d and set a fire outside a Manhattan federal building that houses an immigration court on Monday, authorities said.<\/p>\n
The suspect poured gasoline on the stairs by the entrance to 26 Federal Plaza and then ignited it, sparking a massive fire, according to the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n
FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Barnacle said the suspect used fireworks to set the blaze.<\/p>\n
The suspect \u2014 described by DHS as an \u201canti-ICE rioter\u201d \u2014 was tackled by a Federal Protective Service police officer, DHS said.<\/p>\n
That officer and a civilian suffered minor injuries and were treated and released, officials said.<\/p>\n
The suspect was taken into custody, the FBI said, and the FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating.<\/p>\n
Barnacle described the incident as an \u201canti-government attack on a federal facility.\u201d He said the suspect had an incendiary device, a pellet gun and a sign reading \u201cICE Off Our Streets.\u201d DHS said the suspect was armed with two pellet guns and a \u201cmanifesto.\u201d<\/p>\n
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident \u201cdeeply disturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody,\u201d he wrote on social media. \u201c\u2026 Our administration will continue to ensure that every New Yorker is safe in their city \u2014 and hold accountable any who threaten that.\u201d<\/p>\n
