Construction on West Street<\/p>\n

ICYMI, the Battery Park City Authority has begun construction designed to address resiliency against storms on the northern parts of their property, meaning Rockefeller Park at the end of Chambers down to Murray. The project is huge and will not only stretch over years, but will also extend into Tribeca along West Street and on Harrison up to North Moore.<\/p>\n

This post has more of an overview<\/a> of the construction that will go on for the next four years.<\/p>\n

This post is just a small update on the work you are currently seeing behind construction fences in Rockefeller and on the east side of Stuyvesant High School. As I get more details \u2014 these are just concept plans \u2014 I will add more posts.<\/p>\n

North Esplanade rendering<\/p>\n

NORTH ESPLANADE
This is the stretch of Battery Park City\u2019s parkland that runs along the north side of Stuyvesant along the bulkhead (you can also think of it as the south side of the marina area between Battery Park City and Pier 25). There is a corner where BPCA property meets Hudson River Park and that will be redesigned.<\/p>\n

This area is currently projected to be closed through the second quarter of 2030. The rendering is above. The concept plan is below.<\/p>\n

North Esplanade Plan<\/p>\n

WEST STREET, HARRISON STREET and NORTH MOORE STREET \u2013 AKA REACH 1
The Battery Park City Authority has labeled these construction areas as \u201creaches,\u201d and Reach 1 crosses Route 9A, heads north to North Moore, and then runs along the south side of North Moore, along Independence Plaza, all the way east to Greenwich Street.<\/p>\n

That area is currently projected to be under construction in phases (not the whole stretch at once) from this coming September through August 2030. The concept plans for the north and south sides of West Street are below.<\/p>\n

The general idea: the BPCA will construct both permanent flood barriers and deployable ones. The permanent ones will run along the east side of West Street up to North Moore, then run along North Moore up to around the entrance to Independence Plaza at 80 North Moore. Along that route, both across Route 9A and across Harrison Street, there will be deployable flood barriers that get inserted when the waters rise.<\/p>\n

In the case of Harrison and North Moore, the wall heights will be 9.6 feet above grade.<\/p>\n

The Battery Park City Authority is still finalizing coordination efforts with external stakeholders in that area \u2014 meaning the property owners along West Street. That includes BMCC, Independence Plaza, and the NYC Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n
