A Houston native is making headlines far from the Bayou City after her husband, Zohran Mamdani, was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday\u2019s Election Day.<\/p>\n

Rama Duwaji, an artist and illustrator who was born in Houston in 1997, spent part of her childhood<\/a> in the city before her family moved to Dubai when she was nine years old. Her parents are Syrian immigrants, and Duwaji has often credited her multicultural upbringing for shaping her creative perspective, according to Time Magazine.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mamdani, a New York state assembly member representing parts of Queens, made history with his victory, and Duwaji has quickly drawn attention of her own. Known for her work exploring identity, culture and displacement, she has created art featured in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC and the Tate Modern.<\/p>\n

According to Time Magazine<\/a>, Duwaji and Mamdani met on the dating app Hinge. The couple married in 2021 and have become a familiar presence in New York\u2019s political and artistic circles.<\/p>\n

While Duwaji has lived abroad and built a global career, her Houston roots have not gone unnoticed. <\/p>\n

Local residents have celebrated her connection to the city, noting that she represents another example of Houston\u2019s influence reaching well beyond Texas.<\/p>\n

Duwaji earned a degree in illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art and continues to share her work through exhibitions and online platforms. She told Time<\/a> that she sees her art as a way to bridge cultures and tell stories that reflect \u201cthe feeling of belonging everywhere and nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

As New York City prepares for a new administration, Duwaji\u2019s Houston-born perspective adds a personal layer to a story already gaining national attention.<\/p>\n
