Life sentence in Brooklyn<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan said the \u201calmost unimaginable amount of drugs attributable to him and the number of murders that we can document is enough to justify Congress’s decision to make this a mandatory life sentence,\u201d and the court also ordered Zambada to forfeit $15 billion.<\/p>\n

Zambada, 76, apologized in court \u201cfor the harm I caused and for the example I set,\u201d and he read from a prepared statement that \u201cI grew up in an environment where violence and crime seemed normal, but now I know that’s no excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sentencing followed Zambada\u2019s arrest in 2024 after he said he was kidnapped in Mexico and flown to Texas, and the case was described as the culmination of a yearslong effort to take down the cartel leader who eluded U.S. law enforcement for decades.<\/p>\n

Apologies, forfeiture, and dispute<\/p>\n

In Brooklyn, Zambada appeared in tan prison garb and apologized through a Spanish-language interpreter, saying \u201cI am not here to ask for compassion. I am here to take responsibility and to say I\u2019m sorry \u2014 for the harm I caused and for the example I set.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. told reporters outside court that \u201cDuring El Mayo\u2019s reign, tens of thousands of parents lost their children to addiction, overdose and drug-related violence,\u201d and he said the message was \u201cDrug dealing is a dead end, not just figuratively, but literally a dead end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defense attorney Frank Perez said Zambada didn\u2019t cooperate with the government in a \u201ctypical sense,\u201d adding that he didn\u2019t divulge information about Sinaloa cartel members or Mexican government officials.<\/p>\n

The arrest and transfer also became a point of friction between Mexico and the United States, with the Mexican Attorney General\u2019s Office investigating whether there were irregularities and with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum\u2019s government demanding the U.S. clarify the conditions under which the arrest occurred.<\/p>\n

Cartel fallout and next risks<\/p>\n

The sources also tied the case to the Sinaloa cartel\u2019s internal violence after Zambada\u2019s arrest, describing loyalists pitted against backers of Guzman\u2019s sons, dubbed the Chapitos, or \u201clittle Chapos,\u201d and noting that Zambada\u2019s removal unleashed waves of violence in Sinaloa state.<\/p>\n

The Guardian reported that prosecutors said Zambada was accused of trafficking tons of cocaine, marijuana, heroin and, in recent years, fentanyl, and it also said prosecutors warned that security concerns could continue because \u201cindividuals loyal to the defendant continue to control the cartel.\u201d<\/p>\n
