(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014\u00a0Border czar Tom Homan<\/a>\u00a0announced additional Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> personnel will be deployed to New York City following an alleged attack on a federal building.<\/p>\n

Homan said the move was planned before Monday’s attack<\/a> but argues it underscores growing threats against immigration officers.<\/p>\n

“There’s just another example of someone attacking ICE because of the constant mis-messaging and vilification of the men and women of ICE,” Homan said.<\/p>\n

Homan said more agents are being sent because New York’s sanctuary policies limit cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE. However, he has not said when the agents will arrive or how many will be deployed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is expected to brief Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill Tuesday about the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and ongoing issues with ICE.<\/p>\n

That meeting comes one day after authorities said 43-year-old Andrew Arrabaca, an Army veteran, targeted a federal building in New York City that houses ICE, the FBI and a federal immigration court.<\/p>\n

ICE building attack renews security focus<\/p>\n

Officials allege Arrabaca poured gasoline on the building’s steps before using a firework to ignite the flames. Investigators also allege he fired five to seven pellets from an airsoft rifle at the building before a federal protective service officer tackled him.<\/p>\n

Authorities say Arrabaca, a former Army Patriot missile mechanic, was carrying two axes, a hammer, a machete, three knives, additional incendiary devices and pellet weapons. A sign attached to his cart read, “ICE off our streets.”<\/p>\n

The FBI is calling Arrabaca an anti-American and an anti-government extremist, and federal charges are expected.<\/p>\n

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the attack “deeply disturbing” and pledged the city’s support for the federal investigation.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors are expected to announce federal charges soon, which could determine whether the case is pursued as arson, terrorism or an attempted attack on federal employees.<\/p>\n
