\n\tAva DuVernay<\/a>\u2018s documentary \u201c14th<\/a>\u201d will host its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. It will be the festival\u2019s closing night film on Oct. 9 at Lincoln Center\u2019s Alice Tully Hall. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe timing is poetic because \u201c14th\u201d is the follow-up to DuVernay\u2019s seminal documentary \u201c13th,\u201d which opened the New York Film Festival in 2016. \u201c13th\u201d examined the U.S. Constitution\u2019s 13th Amendment, the abolition of slavery, and argued that loopholes led to today\u2019s mass incarceration of Black Americans. That film was released on the eve of Donald Trump\u2019s first presidency. A sequel, of sorts, \u201c14th\u201d asserts the tenets of the 14th Amendment, which establishes birthright citizenship, due process and equal protection under the law, are now under systematic attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThrough interviews with Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), legal experts Sherrilyn Ifill, Robert Chang, and Stacey Abrams, social commentators like Donald T. Critchlow and Hasan Piker, and many others, DuVernay delves into the 14th Amendment\u2019s \u201cfoundational principles\u201d as well as the \u201cprohibition for heads of state to engage in acts of insurrection all have been challenged to a dangerous degree in recent years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf \u201913th\u2019 asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted,\u201d DuVernay said earlier this month when the project was announced<\/a>. Netflix will release the film on its streaming platform later this year. DuVernay hopes that \u201c14th\u201d leaves audiences \u201cdebating, questioning,\u00a0and, above all, imagining\u00a0what is still possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cExactly a decade after\u00a0\u201913th\u2019\u00a0opened the New York Film Festival, it feels especially meaningful to return with\u00a0\u201914th\u2019\u00a0as the 2026 Closing Night Selection,\u201d said DuVernay. \u201cNYFF has always been a place where films invite conversation rather than simply applause. To that end,\u00a0\u201914th\u2019\u00a0attempts to interrogate a promise powerful enough to change a nation\u2014and controversial enough to divide it for more than 150 years.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0no better place to begin that conversation than NYFF.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuVernay received an Oscar nomination for \u201c13th.\u201d Her other major credits include films like \u201cSelma,\u201d \u201cA Wrinkle in Time\u201d and \u201cOrigin,\u201d and television shows such as \u201cWhen They See Us\u201d and \u201cQueen Sugar.\u201d<\/p>\n

The great gift of this urgent and essential work is its clarity: Ava has made a film that shows us precisely what led us here, and what is at stake right now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe New York Film Festival will take place from Sept. 25 through Oct. 12.\u00a0As previously announced, James Gray\u2019s crime drama \u201cPaper Tiger,\u201d starring Adam Driver,\u00a0Scarlett Johansson\u00a0and Miles Teller, will open the 64th edition of the festival on Sept. 25.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ava DuVernay\u2018s documentary \u201c14th\u201d will host its world premiere at the New York Film Festival.
