It is funded by a combination of city and state funding, and topped up by grants from other charitable organizations as well as private partners and funders.

The organization was established in the mid-1990s, after then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani broke the city’s exclusive contract with the unionized Legal Aid Society when workers went on strike. The Brooklyn Defender Services was one of several new non-union legal organizations that sprang up as a result, but later unionized in 2021.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-403801" src="https://www.newsbeep.com/us-ny/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Mark-Laforest-450x600.jpg" alt="Strike captain and Senior Paralegal Mark Laforest spoke to the Brooklyn Eagle.
