Photo: Mary Frost, Brooklyn Eagle<\/p>\n<p>RED HOOK \u2014 The New York City Economic Development Corporation on Monday announced the expansion of shore power infrastructure at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, which will allow more ships to connect to electric power when docked, reducing toxic diesel emissions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This includes the gargantuan <a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyneagle.com\/tag\/MSC-Meraviglia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MSC Meraviglia<\/a>, which hooked up to the new shore power mechanism for the first time on Oct. 26, and Princess Cruises\u2019 Enchanted Princess, which drew shore power on Aug. 30.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of the expansion, the terminal\u2019s  <a href=\"https:\/\/edc.nyc\/press-release\/nycedc-announces-expansion-shore-power-infrastructure-brooklyn-cruise-terminal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shore power system<\/a> expanded from a \u201cfixed cable\u201d positioning device to a mobile jib, and added additional connection points along the length of the berth, NYCEDC said in a release.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-348637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Meraviglia-ship-100-Mary-Frost-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"he MSC Meraviglia, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. Photo: Mary Frost, Brooklyn Eagle<\/p>\n<p>NYCEDC President and CEO Andrew Kimball touted the shore power upgrade \u2014\u00a0 along with the recently-approved  <a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyneagle.com\/articles\/2025\/09\/22\/brooklyn-marine-terminal-redevelopment-passes-in-controversial-monday-vote\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Marine Terminal<\/a> project (and a forthcoming Manhattan Cruise Terminal master plan). The improvements will ensure that the future of the cruise industry in New York City \u201cis sustainable, efficient, and economically competitive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMSC Cruises\u2019 shore power connection this past weekend\u2014and the connections of Cunard and Princess cruise ships in recent months\u2014delivers on years of community feedback and marks a major step in electrifying New York\u2019s waterfront,\u201d Kimball added.<\/p>\n<p>The move to shore power, a broad industry trend, was accelerated by the City Council\u2019s passage in March of the \u201c <a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyneagle.com\/articles\/2024\/03\/11\/bill-passed-to-cut-pollution-from-giant-cruise-ships-in-red-hook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Our Air Our Water Act<\/a>,\u201d which requires giant cruise ships with the capacity to do so to connect to the electric power grid on shore rather than burning diesel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-348638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Alexa-Aviles-BMT-rally-Mary-Frost-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Councilmember Alexa Avil\u00e9s at a recent Brooklyn Marine Terminal rally. Photo: Mary Frost, Brooklyn Eagle<\/p>\n<p>The bill also requires traffic mitigation plans for neighborhoods \u2014 like Red Hook, the Columbia Street Waterfront District and Manhattan\u2019s West Side \u2014 affected by idling cruise ships, which can discharge thousands of passengers at one time, overwhelming local streets.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, which was opposed by NYCEDC, was introduced by Red Hook\u2019s Councilmember Alexa Avil\u00e9s and co-sponsored by Manhattan Councilmember Erik Bottcher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter years of being promised a mobile jib that will help us improve air quality here in Red Hook, the day has finally come!\u201d Avil\u00e9s said in a release. \u201cWhile we celebrate the elimination of tons of toxic fumes from our local air, more work remains.
