New York City<\/a> Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> on Wednesday announced he was appointing Lina Khan<\/a>, a leading champion of enforcing US antitrust<\/a> laws, to serve as chair of the city’s Economic Development Corporation.<\/p>\n

In prepared remarks<\/a>, Khan\u2014the former chair of the Federal Trade<\/a> Commission\u2014said she looked forward to working with Tony Shorris, the former executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who was appointed by Mamdani as the EDC’s new president.<\/a><\/p>\n

The former Biden administration<\/a> official also gave an overview of what she hoped to achieve at the EDC.<\/p>\n

“EDC has key tools to drive projects that grow our economy, create good jobs, promote entrepreneurship, and make life more affordable for New Yorkers,” she said. “EDC has enormous capacity to make life materially better for New Yorkers\u2014and to ensure that public resources are helping build state capacity.”<\/p>\n

A Wednesday report<\/a> from Gothamist noted that Khan’s appointment as chair “amounts to a shakeup for the agency, which has been criticized over the years for being too cozy with business interests,” while noting that Shorris’ appointment as president “was seen by some as a nod to the business community.”<\/p>\n
