{"id":303619,"date":"2026-07-23T10:35:25","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/303619\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T10:35:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:35:25","slug":"nyc-landlords-sue-to-invalidate-mamdani-backed-rent-freeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/303619\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC landlords sue to invalidate Mamdani-backed rent freeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) &#8212; A group of New York City landlords sued to void a rent freeze approved in June, arguing that Mayor Zohran Mamdani improperly influenced the Rent Guidelines Board\u2019s vote and ignored evidence of rising operating costs for building owners.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/documents\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/r0f7e9FqS6sA\/v0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lawsuit<\/a>, filed Wednesday in Staten Island, contends the board\u2019s decision was \u201carbitrary and capricious\u201d because it relied on erroneous and manipulated data. Mamdani also allegedly appointed board members \u201cpredisposed\u201d to support a rent freeze.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani \u201cwent to extraordinary lengths to pack the board with loyalists and then spent millions in city funds to fill the board\u2019s hearings with tenant advocates\u201d in order to deliver on his campaign promise of freezing rent,\u201d the landlords claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for Mamdani\u2019s administration didn\u2019t immediately respond to request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The suit was brought by five small landlords of properties in Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx.
