Six firefighters from the New York City<\/a> Fire Department (FDNY) were injured on Wednesday(October 5) after a powerful car explosion sent a massive fireball into the night sky in the Bronx<\/a>, officials said. At present, the precise nature and severity of the wounds have not been released by FDNY<\/a>. They were transported to Jacobi Hospital<\/a> for evaluation. The incident comes just a day after Zohran Mamdani<\/a>\u2019s historic election as New York City mayor, putting early attention on the challenges the incoming administration may face in protecting the city\u2019s neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at approximately 7:06 pm local time when first responders arrived at the intersection of 955 Westchester Avenue (near Intervale Avenue and Kelly Street) in the Longwood section. The call initially reported a car fire and a trash fire in front of a multi\u2011story building, according to the FDNY. Video captured by bystanders shows a giant orange fireball erupting from the vehicle, accompanied by towering plumes of smoke that illuminated the sky above the Bronx neighborhood. Witnesses said the explosion shook surrounding buildings and startled residents several blocks away. <\/p>\n
