SAN \u200cFRANCISCO, July 21 (Reuters) – The first components of an ASML \u200cnext-generation chipmaking tool arrived at New York state’s Albany NanoTech Complex on Tuesday, \u200bthe governor’s office said. <\/p>\n
The NanoTech complex will use the tool to conduct research and development on future forms of chip design and manufacturing. <\/p>\n
The NanoTech facility is the only one of its kind in \u200cNorth America, according to \u2060NY Creates Chief Executive Dave Anderson, and is similar in scope and focus to Europe’s Imec, which \u2060operates in Belgium. <\/p>\n
“It really is transformative for the future of our scope of activities as well as U.S.-based R&D, and really, we’re \u200bkind of \u200bat the epicenter of that \u200bnext generation of technology development,” \u200cAnderson said. <\/p>\n
NY Creates oversees the facility and has partnered with IBM, memory maker Micron and the Japanese chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron. <\/p>\n
ASML’s next-generation high numerical aperture (High NA) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machine prints circuit patterns onto silicon wafers and costs roughly $400 million apiece. <\/p>\n
The tools are \u200cthought to be necessary to produce \u200badvanced processors in the future as \u200bchipmakers continue to shrink \u200batomic-sized features that make up chips. <\/p>\n
The components that arrived \u200cTuesday form the base of \u200bthe mainframe of \u200bthe tool and will receive further deliveries of the remaining components in the coming weeks as it is assembled at \u200bthe facility. Anderson \u200cexpects to have the tool fully functional by the \u200bend of the year. <\/p>\n
