The street was co-named Ms. Gloria Thomas Way.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to those who knew her, Thomas was a long-time leader of her tenant association, of the AquaUni190 Neighborhood Association, and had tirelessly advocated for residents along Aqueduct Avenue, University Avenue, and 190th Street. She was also a former member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/52nd-precinct-community-council-bestows-honors-on-members-of-the-community\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">52nd Precinct Community Council<\/a>, and a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-northwest-bronx-community-clergy-coalition-go-bronx-wide-relaunching-as-our-bronx\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Our Bronx<\/a>, formerly Northwest Bronx Community &amp; Clergy Coalition. Thomas died on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at the age of 84.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Page-2-Gloria_Thomas-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-135491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Page-2-Gloria_Thomas-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"  \/><\/a>ROBIN, DAUGHTER OF community activist Gloria Thomas, touches a photograph of her mother during a street co-naming ceremony for Thomas at Aqueduct Avenue and West 190th Street in University Heights, The Bronx on Monday, July 13, 2026. <br \/>Photo by David Greene<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1974, Our Bronx unites diverse peoples and institutions to fight for racial justice and economic democracy through intergenerational community organizing to transform The Bronx and beyond, according to its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before the unveiling, Alan Richardson told the crowd, \u201cThere are people who simply live in a community, and then there are those who become the heart of it. Ms. Gloria Thomas was the heart of Aqueduct Avenue and the love pillar of The Bronx.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Richardson, Thomas was born in Manhattan on Jan. 1, 1939, amid World War II, and was raised in Harlem with her six siblings. She moved to The Bronx in 1963, where she attended Bronx Community College in University Heights. There, she studied nursing and spent 12 years as a nurse at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx before taking a job as a supervisor at the NYC Parks department. He said she later worked at New York City Department of Social Services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Page-2-Gloria_Thomas-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-135492 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Page-2-Gloria_Thomas-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"  \/><\/a>A NEW STREET sign is revealed on Monday, July 13, 2026, co-naming Aqueduct Avenue at West 190th Street in University Heights, The Bronx, as Ms. Gloria Thomas Way in honor of the community activist. <br \/>Photo by David Greene<\/p>\n<p>Richardson credited Thomas with helping bring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/police-athletic-league-kids-celebrate-summer-fun-games-at-bronx-regional-day\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Police Athletic League\u2019s<\/a> Play Street\u2019s Summer Program to Aqueduct Avenue, helping to organize a yearly block party, and personally funding an annual back-to-school giveaway. He said Thomas also led a fight against a landlord that led to the creation of the Proactive Preservation Initiative (PPI), a program that identifies at-risk families and properties run by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/norwood-hpd-launches-housing-lottery-described-as-affordable-for-units-at-3547-webster-ave\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYC Department of Housing, Preservation &amp; Development<\/a>\u00a0(HPD).
