{"id":304367,"date":"2026-07-24T00:48:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T00:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/304367\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T00:48:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T00:48:27","slug":"giant-wieners-drag-queens-and-curtis-sliwa-at-the-most-american-pageant-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/304367\/","title":{"rendered":"Giant Wieners, Drag Queens, and Curtis Sliwa at \u201cThe Most American Pageant Ever!\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Watching Curtis Sliwa watch comedian Spike Einbinder \u2014 brother of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt11815682\/?ref=hyperallergic.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hacks<\/a> star Hannah Einbinder and son of Saturday Night Live alum Laraine Newman \u2014 get shot in a comedic recreation of the former New York City Republican mayoral candidate&#8217;s infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/06\/21\/nyregion\/koch-visits-sliwa-as-police-inquiry-fails-to-yield-shooting-suspect.html?ref=hyperallergic.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1992 kidnapping and shooting<\/a> was the kind of experience I\u2019ll remember for the rest of my life. Thankfully, the other parts of the performance were just as absurd, verging on the erratic, which was pitch-perfect for The Most American Pageant Ever!, an event billed as a \u201crenewed portrait of America,\u201d though it often felt more like an elegy during the nation\u2019s semiquincentennial year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02371.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>Former Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, along with the other performance art event judges, holds his hand to his heart during the singing of the US national anthem during the event<\/p>\n<p>Even if you believe that the United States is the \u201cgreatest country in the world,\u201d like both the Donald Trump impersonator \u2014 who was seemingly everywhere in the show and acted out the President\u2019s infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/gunman-who-attempted-trump-assassination-saw-butler-rally-as-target-of-opportunity-fbi-says?ref=hyperallergic.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Butler assassination<\/a> attempt not once but twice \u2014 and the real one, who continues to spew it like a truism even when evidence to the contrary is staring us in the face, you will have to admit that this crassly thrilling celebration in front of a giant wiener cannon was just what we needed at a time of deep sorrow? repose? regret? \u2026\u00a0However you characterize it, it\u2019s deep, because this is America and we do things in extremes, even when we\u2019re gloriously shallow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Most American Pageant Ever! was organized by artists Jen Catron, Paul Outlaw, and Abby Lloyd (also the Trump impersonator), who are wizards of the glittery stars-and-stripes variety of quintessential Americana, and their fete at capitalism\u2019s commercial heart felt as unscripted as reality TV.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02425.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>The Trump impersonator standing in front of the contestants, including the hyper-capitalist entrepreneur played by Jordan Cooley, and the other contestants, which included Spike Einbinder, Ellery Neon, Kenneth Youngblood, Kiki Ball-Change, Celine Abdallah, Relish the Entertainer, Peter BD, and Claywoman<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02434.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>UPS delivery person shows up with the Epstein files as two Revolutionary-era actors linger in the background<\/p>\n<p>The contestants ranged from a drag queen as Melania to a voguer named Relish, an alien, a primordial clay woman, a patriotic singer named Kenneth Youngblood, a hyper-capitalist entrepreneur, and a UPS delivery person who dropped off the Epstein files from Mar-a-Lago before entering the contest and getting down for the talent competition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02344.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>Abby Lloyd as the Trump impersonator takes to the stage with artists Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw looking on<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02668.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>Relish the Entertainer wows with his floor performance<\/p>\n<p>The mood was jubilant, the music was too loud, the shtick turned the volume to maximum, and even when there were groan-filled lulls, the performers uplifted you into thinking that maybe the best part of this country is that we have no shame, at least not in the pursuit of money, fame, or even art, apparently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was no land acknowledgment, an absence only made more noticeable by the throngs of tourists who got their crazy New York story to regale those back home. The winner was supposed to be announced first by Trump, who wanted to award it to himself, and then by Outlaw, who grabbed the mic and bestowed the golden crown and flag cape on Spike Einbinder, which was picture-perfect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02516-1.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>The alien contestant shines on stage <\/p>\n<p>Einbinder was invited to tap a comically oversized button that was supposed to release the unredacted Epstein files and did so with a cannon shot out of the giant hot dog that I assume was supposed to reproduce a cum shot, even if a somewhat anemic one, far short of our expectations of porn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During her opening remarks, Catron explained why the giant hot dog parked in Times Square felt necessary, and she referenced their original performance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/jen-catron-paul-outlaw-65-foot-wiener-lands-in-times-square\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massive prop<\/a> in 2024, called \u201cHot Dog in the City\u201d; this iteration was called \u201cThe Second Serving,\u201d because the gluttony of this nation means we\u2019re always returning for more, more, and more. She explained that they created this giant food item because \u201cWe were interested in the hot dog as a symbol of spectacle, celebration, contradiction, and excess. It&#8217;s a surprisingly loaded object, it speaks to class, to capitalism and how it\u2019s made and consumed, and \u2026 the enduring myth of the American dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02312.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1422\"  \/>The giant Catron\/Outlaw hot dog cannon parked in Times Square<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02793.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>Spike Einbinder being stalked by a taxi assassin on stage<\/p>\n<p>In that idol-sized sculpture, the artists see a nation \u201cbuilt on enormous optimism and enormous contradictions,\u201d according to Catron, and the last two years \u201chave felt \u2026 more chaotic, more polarized, more surreal, and somehow always a little louder.\u201d She admitted that their taste is over-the-top, but they also see how \u201creality had outpaced the [art]work.\u201d You can\u2019t argue with that.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the way to celebrate the United States of America is by making fun of ourselves, because we\u2019ve become the clowns of the planet while still dominating it through our wealth and power, both hard and soft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, I attended the Great American State Fair in Washington, DC, and it was as sad as you could imagine, something that would\u2019ve been more appropriate for a regional college or small county fair than a world superpower. At the Catron and Outlaw celebration, I saw something that I didn\u2019t encounter in DC that day, namely a self-consciousness about what we\u2019re facing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DSC02870.jpeg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>A view of the Times Square audience at the event<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa said it best when he witnessed the restaging of his assassination attempt on stage: \u201cImitation is the highest form of flattery.\u201d And in that regard, the artists flatter the American Republic in a way that perhaps it doesn\u2019t deserve, but feels necessary nonetheless.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Giovanni\u2019s Room (1956), James Baldwin writes, \u201cPerhaps, as we say in America, I wanted to find myself. This is an interesting phrase, not current as far as I know in the language of any other people, which certainly does not mean what it says but betrays a nagging suspicion that something has been misplaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something has certainly been misplaced in the United States of America.
