Two men were stabbed Thursday on Manhattan\u2019s Upper West Side, including a Jewish man wearing a\u00a0yarmulke, in\u00a0attacks that New York police are investigating as\u00a0possible hate\u00a0crimes after witnesses said the suspect shouted \u201cAllahu Akbar.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the incident, blaming what he described as months of anti-Israel incitement by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The stabbings occurred during Tisha\u00a0b\u2019Av, the Jewish day of mourning. Police said both victims were hospitalized in stable condition after initially reporting that one had been in critical condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to the New York Police Department, the first attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. at West 84th Street and Central Park West, where a 57-year-old Asian man was stabbed in the torso. A second victim, a 50-year-old Jewish man, was stabbed near West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, close to a church and an Orthodox synagogue.\u00a0<\/p>\n
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers arrested Raul Morales, 51, and that no\u00a0additional\u00a0suspects were being sought.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDetectives continue to investigate the case and\u00a0determine\u00a0the motive, but according to statements from the victims and eyewitnesses, Morales shouted \u2018Allahu Akbar\u2019 during both attacks. The NYPD (New York Police Department) is examining whether this was a hate crime,\u201d Tisch said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She added, \u201cWhile the attacker has no known history of mental health issues, the preliminary investigation suggests that\u00a0mental\u00a0state may be a factor in the incident. At this stage, no connection is known between Morales and any of the victims, nor between the victims themselves.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to the Anti-Defamation League, one of the victims was wearing a kippah,\u00a0identifying\u00a0him as Jewish. City Council Speaker Julie Menin called the incident an \u201cantisemitic stabbing,\u201d saying \u201cthe fear in the Jewish community is real, and every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood regardless of their faith or identity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mamdani said he had been briefed on the attacks and thanked responding police officers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe NYPD\u2019s\u00a0initial\u00a0investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor. They are also evaluating these stabbings as potential hate crimes,\u201d he said. \u201cThese hateful and despicable attacks have no place in our city.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Saar wrote on X, \u201cI am appalled by the horrific antisemitic stabbing attack in New York. Appalled but sadly not surprised.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cThis violence did not happen in a vacuum. Months of incitement against the Jewish state from Mamdani have helped create a climate in which Jews are targeted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWords have consequences.
