STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 A \u201cclipper-type\u201d storm will sweep through New York on Wednesday night, bringing with it some strong winds.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of the times you see those type of systems in the wintertime, you know, where you have a strong, fast-moving storm that moves \u2014 it passes by to our north across the Great Lakes and across maybe upstate New York, northern New York State, northern New England and then off the New England coast and out through the maritimes and that\u2019s exactly what it is, actually strengthening over time as it\u2019s pushing eastward,\u201d Dave Dombek, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather<\/a>, explained.<\/p>\n A cold front attached to that storm will pass through the New York City area after about 10 p.m.<\/p>\n \u201cVery, very moisture starved,\u201d Dombek said of the storm. \u201cNot much going on, there\u2019s so little moisture with it, but it might be enough to generate a shower.\u201d<\/p>\n The arrival of the cold front will bring a period of strong, gusty winds. For \u201cat least several hours\u201d after the front passes, gusts will persist.<\/p>\n Dombek foresees general gusts in the range of 45-50 mph Wednesday night going into Thursday morning.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not out of the question that somebody gets a gust even close to 60 (mph),\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n While a 60 mph gust could be measured in the city, Dombek believes gusts of that strength are more likely further north of the city.<\/p>\n As the front passes it will bring cooler air, opening the door to some potential snow in areas of upstate New York.<\/p>\n In the Adirondacks and potentially even the Catskills, Dombek said snow showers or flurries are possible with this system.<\/p>\n While conditions will dry out on Thursday and Friday, further cold fronts could bring some moisture and changes in temperature in the coming days<\/a>.<\/p>\n Ahead of Wednesday night\u2019s anticipated winds, Gov. Kathy Hochul urged residents to prepare<\/a> and announced trailer bans on seven state bridges.<\/p>\n Additionally, the National Weather Service<\/a> has issued a wind advisory that will remain in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday through 8 a.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
