Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor-elect<\/a> Zohran Mamdani, will make history as the city\u2019s first Gen Z first lady \u2014 though the 28-year-old has largely stayed out of the spotlight, she has played a key role behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

According to CNN, Duwaji helped shape<\/a> her husband\u2019s campaign branding, finalizing the distinctive yellow, orange and blue color palette as well as the bold iconography and font that became hallmarks of his campaign. She\u2019s also credited with elevating Mamdani\u2019s digital strategy and social media presence, serving as a major source of private support throughout his political rise, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n

Despite skipping debates<\/a> and major public appearances ahead of Election Day, Duwaji celebrated her husband throughout his mayoral campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On June 24, after former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) conceded<\/a> the Democratic mayoral primary, Duwaji stood beside Mamdani as he delivered his victory speech<\/a> and joined him onstage.<\/p>\n

That same day, Duwaji shared a photobooth strip of her and Mamdani<\/a> on Instagram with the caption, \u201cCouldn\u2019t possibly be prouder.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair also cast their ballots together. Though Duwaji has not yet spoken publicly about Mamdani\u2019s general election victory<\/a>, she joined him onstage as he was declared the winner.<\/p>\n

Who is Rama Duwaji?<\/p>\n

Born in Texas, Duwaji holds a master\u2019s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York, a campaign spokesperson told The New York Times<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to her L\u2019AiR Arts biography<\/a>, she earned her BFA in communication design from Virginia Commonwealth University.<\/p>\n

In a June 2022 conversation with Yung Mea<\/a>, an outlet dedicated to arts and culture focused on the Middle East and Africa, Duwaji shared that she spent the COVID-19 pandemic living with her family in Dubai but had long hoped to relocate to New York, a dream she fulfilled around 2021.<\/p>\n

Now based in Brooklyn, Duwaji works as an illustrator and animator, with a portfolio that includes collaborations with The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, Apple, Spotify, VICE and the Tate Modern. Outside of digital art, she also creates handmade ceramics, per her portfolio website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What are her views on political issues?<\/p>\n

Duwaji\u2019s artwork often reflects her political and humanitarian concerns. Her social media features black-and-white illustrations depicting Middle Eastern women, the Palestinian flag and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.<\/p>\n

The imagery aligns with her husband\u2019s outspoken criticism<\/a> of the Israeli government and its handling of the war following Hamas\u2019s attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which sparked conflict in the region.<\/p>\n

Duwaji\u2019s art has also addressed other global issues: At the onset of the Sudanese civil war in April 2023, she created an illustration of a Sudanese woman with the caption \u201cEyes on Sudan,\u201d sharing information about the conflict\u2019s toll on civilians and how to support refugees.<\/p>\n

In an April conversation with\u00a0Yung Mea<\/a>, Duwaji explained, \u201cThese days, I focus on making art about my experiences and the things I care about, and the community that forms from conversations about my work \u2014 both online and in person \u2014 happens organically. I make my work for people who care about the things I care about.\u201d<\/p>\n

How did Duwaji, Mamandi meet?<\/p>\n

During a June 17 appearance on\u00a0\u201cThe Bulwark<\/a>\u201d\u00a0podcast, Mamdani revealed that he met Duwaji on the dating app Hinge, joking that there \u201cis still hope in those dating apps.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the couple hasn\u2019t shared exactly when they met, Mamdani posted a photo<\/a> taken by Duwaji in April 2022.<\/p>\n

The couple appeared to get engaged in October 2024, when he posted an Instagram photo<\/a> of Duwaji with a ring emoji and the hashtag #hardlaunch.<\/p>\n

The two tied the knot in a civil ceremony at the City Clerk\u2019s Office in early 2025, Mamdani told Interview Magazine<\/a>, followed by a larger celebration after, his campaign team told The New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n
