The cute hole-in-the-wall on Reade that was for the past decade Jack\u2019s Stir Brew Coffee<\/a> is now the new home to Neiberhud Coffee<\/a>, which has one other location on Thompson in Soho. Thanks to M. and N. for the heads up. They are using the pickup window, which is just the best (and more on that theme tomorrow, with the arrival of Fiolino in Battery Park City).<\/p>\n

I met the owner when I went by: David Baram said he has owned car washes \u2014 Hi-Tek \u2014 for 40 years. This is is his first foray into coffeeshops, though the parent company for Neiberhud, Toorma Group<\/a>, seems to have a broader reach. They call themselves food and bev consultants that \u201cspecialize in devising bespoke A-Z concepts and menus for a diverse global clientele\u201d with offices in Riyadh, Doha, Lisbon and S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n

They sell the usual range of coffees \u2014 a medium drip is $4 \u2014 plus matcha, herbal teas and a bunch of specialty drinks \u2014 coco coffee cloud, vanilla lemonade, an oj espresso. (From A., since I don\u2019t drink coffee: \u201cI had the pistachio latte this morning and I think it just became my favorite coffee shop in the area.) I will go back to sample more, but for now \u2014 the dates.<\/p>\n

They make them<\/a> in the Soho location and even give one away for free with a coffee purchase. This will be my go-to food-centric house gift, other than Frenchette Bakery bread and butter. A box of 12 was $35 \u2014 they are $4 to $5 each \u2014 and this week they had six different flavors. Baram is originally from Israel, which is the largest exporter of Medjool dates, with more than 50 percent of the market. And while he\u2019s selling coffee, it seems like it is just to accompany the dates. \u201cWhat we do that other people don\u2019t do is dates,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople go crazy for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Thompson Street location opened in January 2025, then closed for a time, then reopened this spring. It\u2019s a bigger operation there.<\/p>\n

I did have to ask about the name, since it\u2019s a bit silly. \u201cWhat can I tell you, I\u2019m an older guy,\u201d Baram said. \u201cThe kids [the marketing team] came up with it. But we are a neighborhood place, so it works out.\u201d<\/p>\n
