{"id":306488,"date":"2026-07-27T13:16:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/306488\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T13:16:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:16:09","slug":"lawsuit-heads-to-trial-as-tenants-allege-years-of-neglect-at-jamaica-towers-queens-daily-eagle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/306488\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawsuit heads to trial as tenants allege years of neglect at Jamaica towers \u2014 Queens Daily Eagle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cThis is a couple of corporations that think they can receive a significant amount of money from the city and state, and take advantage of people,\u201d said Monica Mercola, a staff attorney at The Legal Aid Society&#8217;s Housing Justice Unit, which is representing the tenants in their court cases. \u201cThey think they can take advantage of people who won&#8217;t fight back, and it&#8217;s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A representative of the buildings\u2019 owners did not respond to a request for comment before print time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In court filings, the landlords have said that they have \u201ctaken numerous measures to address the conditions\u201d in the buildings. They have also denied claims that they have harassed tenants. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Though the landlords have submitted several motions to have the case against them dismissed, they have all been denied by a judge. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u2018One bad situation\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Many of the 88 residents who signed on to the lawsuit against The Crossing\u2019s owners have a similar story. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In search of a more affordable and higher quality home, many applied to the city\u2019s affordable housing lottery program. They were excited when they learned they had qualified for The Crossing and were even more thrilled when they toured the buildings, which opened shortly after the start of the pandemic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI felt like it was an amazing place,\u201d Cadet said. \u201cIt&#8217;s a beautiful space. It&#8217;s convenient.
