The free event, also available via livestream, will feature street festivals, concerts, film programs, career fairs, and more.

“It’s just a great big party and I think there’s something for everyone,” L. Adé Williams, first vice chairperson of Harlem Week, said.

The theme this year is “Honoring Our Legacy.” Organizers said it’s a way to honor the rich legacy of Harlem and of the event itself, which has seen several changes over the last year, as it has across its entire half-century history.

This is the first Harlem Week planned without Williams’s father, Harlem Week co-founder Lloyd A. Williams, who helped run the event every year until he died Aug. 5, 2025, after a battle with cancer.

The organizing board this year saw other changes. Barbara Burwell, community member and long-time treasurer of the festival, died last year. Burwell’s first vice chair, Voza Rivers, stepped away from duty, also.

The board elected a new group for this year. Marko Nobles serves as the chairman, Williams as first vice chair, Tamiko Evans as second vice chair, Christian Green as treasurer, and Michael Flanagan as secretary.

“We’re honoring the legacy of other people who founded or sustained Harlem Week for decades,” Williams, whose family has lived in Harlem since 1919, said. “We’re also celebrating the legacy of this community. This is America’s 250th anniversary. But part of what made America great is what emanated from Harlem.”

This year’s honorees

Honorees this year include R&B and soul singer and songwriter Maxwell and the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite; late gospel singer and songwriter Richard Smallwood; and the Harlem-based Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Harlem Week, since its founding, has been an important part of Harlem’s history. The first Harlem Week, which took place in 1974, was only one day, however.

“It was created to uplift the community and remind the residents of Harlem at that time the special nature of the location they lived in at the time Harlem Day was created,” Nobles said.

The first Harlem Week came at a time when Harlem was losing residents and taking damage to its public image, Nobles said. The event eventually became longer, as it grew in popularity and significance, until it reached its current two-week length.

Many of the organizers came up through the festival itself, seeing it as children and joining as interns or staff. Nobles sold T-shirts, worked a food truck, and handled public relations before landing in his current role. He described himself and other board members as “Children of Harlem Week.”

The event is an opportunity for New Yorkers, and beyond, to learn about Harlem’s contributions to culture. It’s also an opportunity to fall in love with Harlem, and keep returning, just like Nobles and Williams and other organizers did with Harlem Week.

“After Harlem Week,” Nobles said, “come back.”

Main events at Harlem Week 2026

Here’s a rundown of some of the main events of this year’s Harlem Week.

NYC Summer Streets celebrating Harlem (Aug. 1,8, and 15; 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

The stretch of road from 109th Street and Park Avenue to 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard closes to cars for biking, walking, running, skating, dancing, and live music.

Harlem Summerstage (Aug. 6 and 13; 5 to 7 p.m.)

Held in the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building.
