A Brooklyn\u00a0street has been named in\u00a0honour\u00a0of late\u00a0Wu-Tang Clan<\/a>\u00a0co-founder\u00a0Ol\u2019 Dirty Bastard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A section of Putnam Avenue in Brooklyn\u2019s Bedford-Stuyvesant\u00a0neighbourhood\u00a0was officially co-named \u2018ODB Jones Way\u2019 during a ceremony on Saturday (July 25).<\/p>\n

The event brought together the rapper\u2019s friends and family, members of the local community and government officials, including New York City Council Member Chi Oss\u00e9. The new sign was unveiled at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Putnam Avenue.<\/p>\n

ODB\u2019s eldest brother, Ramsey Jones, explained that the sign had been placed on the same block where their grandmother still lives.<\/p>\n

The block is also home to a well-known mural depicting the cover of the rapper\u2019s 1995 debut solo album, \u2018Return\u00a0To\u00a0The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version\u2019.<\/p>\n

Born Russell Tyrone Jones in Brooklyn in 1968, ODB helped form Wu-Tang Clan in the early 1990s and appeared on their landmark 1993 debut album, \u2018Enter\u00a0The\u00a0Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)\u2019.<\/p>\n

He later launched a solo career with \u2018Return\u00a0To\u00a0The 36 Chambers\u2019, which included \u2018Brooklyn Zoo\u2019 and \u2018Shimmy\u00a0Shimmy\u00a0Ya\u2019,\u00a0and also\u00a0appeared on the remix of\u00a0Mariah Carey<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Fantasy\u2019.<\/p>\n

ODB died from an accidental drug overdose in November 2004, two days before his 36th birthday.<\/p>\n

The street re-naming follows the New York City Council\u2019s decision in 2023 to designate November 15 \u2013 the rapper\u2019s birthday \u2013 as Ol\u2019 Dirty Bastard Day in recognition of his influence on generations of hip-hop artists.<\/p>\n

Wu-Tang Clan, meanwhile,\u00a0recently completed the UK and European leg of their farewell \u2018The Final Chamber\u2019 tour<\/a>, which included a tribute to ODB and other late figures from the group\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0NME\u00a0ahead of the shows<\/a>,\u00a0RZA<\/a>\u00a0said the tour was intended to cement the collective\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of heroes go unsung, and I\u00a0refuse for\u00a0that to happen, to be quite frank with you,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was just time for us to make sure our footprint is clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIf we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0come, then a lot of things\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0happen. If we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0break through, then a bunch of guys\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0break through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wu-Tang Clan\u00a0are\u00a0also due to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall\u00a0Of Fame<\/a> this November alongside Oasis<\/a>,\u00a0Iron Maiden<\/a>,\u00a0Sade<\/a>,\u00a0Joy Division<\/a>\/New Order<\/a>,\u00a0Phil Collins<\/a>,\u00a0Billy Idol<\/a>\u00a0and Luther Vandross.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Brooklyn\u00a0street has been named in\u00a0honour\u00a0of late\u00a0Wu-Tang Clan\u00a0co-founder\u00a0Ol\u2019 Dirty Bastard.
