{"id":307219,"date":"2026-07-28T00:36:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T00:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/307219\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T00:36:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T00:36:08","slug":"new-york-state-bar-association-to-host-free-program-on-managing-student-loan-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/307219\/","title":{"rendered":"New York State Bar Association To Host Free Program on Managing Student Loan Debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tNew York State Bar Association To Host Free Program on Managing Student Loan Debt<\/p>\n<p class=\"sr-only\">7.27.2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"sr-only author\">By Rebecca Melnitsky<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103899\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/StudentLoansBankruptcy_675.png\" alt=\"Student Loan Resources\" width=\"675\" height=\"250\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The New York State Bar Association is hosting a free\u00a0webinar\u00a0on Aug. 11 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.\u00a0to help\u00a0new attorneys\u00a0plan for the future\u00a0and\u00a0figure out a financial plan to\u00a0manage\u00a0student loan debt.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Education Data Initiative, the average law student graduate owes $137,500 in student loan debt, and roughly 85% of students borrowed to fund their law and undergraduate degrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupporting new attorneys as they navigate significant student loan debt is essential to ensuring they enter the profession with stability and momentum,\u201d\u00a0said Taa Grays, president of the New York State Bar Association.\u00a0\u201cThis program advances our mission by equipping them with the tools to succeed and reinforcing our role as a powerful advocate for the future of legal practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The webinar, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nysba.org\/events\/starting-strong-what-new-lawyers-need-to-know-about-student-loan-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Starting Strong: What New Lawyers Need to Know About Student Loan Solutions<\/a>\u201d will cover comprehensive financial planning, including cash flow design, combatting lifestyle creep and strategically deploying savings. It is free to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees will receive critical guidance on the upcoming 2026\u20132028 Federal Loan Reset, learn when to preserve federal flexibility versus refinance, and understand how borrowing decisions impact broader goals like home buying and retirement, all while ensuring their financial choices support both professional competence and long-term well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Marcella Jayne, chair of the association\u2019s Young Lawyers Section, will moderate the Aug. 11 discussion.<\/p>\n<p>The panel of financial experts will be:<\/p>\n<p>Renee Kuperman, bankruptcy and restructuring attorney.<br \/>\nGeoff Urquhart, CEO of Sharp Notions and co-founder of GradFin, a student loan advisory platform.<br \/>\nMykole Santiago, associate at Prosperian Wealth Management and financial representative at Strategies for Wealth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudent debt is a structural problem, not simply a personal budgeting challenge,\u201d said Jayne. \u201cIt shapes where young lawyers can work and whether they can buy homes or start families. Financial planning alone cannot solve that larger problem, but this long-overdue program will give young attorneys honest information about the options actually available to them.
