BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WRGB) \u2014 New York state is cracking down on addictive social media algorithmic feeds for kids.<\/p>\n
Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James announced final regulations for New York\u2019s Safe for Kids Act at an event Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
The law bans platforms from providing addictive algorithmic feeds to users under 18 without parental consent.<\/p>\n
It also bans platforms from sending notifications to minors from midnight to 6 a.m. without parental consent.<\/p>\n
\u201cChildren need to sleep. Sleep is so fundamentally important and critical to a child’s growth and to their development,\u201d James said.<\/p>\n
Penalties could be $5,000 per violation, according to state officials.<\/p>\n
\u201cSocial media companies, you’re now on notice. The regulations are done. You have 180 days to come into compliance,\u201d Hochul said.<\/p>\n
