While searching for a new location, the troupe reached out to Industry City, where Jim Somoza, managing director and partner, helped Puppetworks secure a new home at the Sunset Park creative hub, stage manager and puppeteer Julia Moore told Brooklyn Paper.

The new location at 511 35th St. is a perfect match and comparable to Puppetworks’ former space, Moore said. It will accommodate 75 guests and feature space for birthday parties and workshops for adults, children and families, providing another revenue stream. The venue is also easily accessible to school buses.

The space will receive a fresh coat of paint and new curtains to create a cozy environment that retains the same sense of nostalgia as the current theater.

“We get a lot of people saying how they came when they were a kid. Now they’re bringing their kids, or they’re bringing their grandkids, and we really want to hold on to that energy because we absolutely love hearing that,” Moore explained. “We love making generational memories for Brooklyn families, and we just think Sunset Park is full of Brooklyn families, and we just really want to serve our patrons the best we can.”

Industry City is the right fit, Moore explained, because it already draws families with a variety of activities for children.

“I feel like Industry City has a lot of third-space energy, which is something we’re losing. It has a very collaborative energy; people are really excited that we’re moving in,” Moore said.

Packing up an entire theater with more than 200 puppets won’t be an easy feat. However, what could have been a logistical nightmare turned into another full-circle Brooklyn story.

U. Santini Moving & Storage, a neighborhood staple since 1930, is helping Puppetworks pack up and move 36 years of memories. One of the company’s owners told Moore that he’s a “Puppetworks Kid” and was more than “thrilled” to coordinate the move.

After 36 years in Park Slope, Puppetworks found a new home at Industry City.

“Once I met with him, all of that stress just sort of faded away, and I feel like we’re in really good hands, and they are happy to help us move, and I just I’m not even worried about that anymore,” Moore said. “I know it’ll be a lot of work, but they’ve just been really fantastic to collaborate with on this endeavor.”

The final curtain at Puppetworks’ Park Slope theater will fall on Aug. 9. Before then, on July 31, the theater will host a nostalgia show featuring iconic scenes from three of the puppeteers’ favorite classic marionette productions, with live introductions by founder and artistic director Nicolas Coppola.

Admission is a minimum donation of $36 per person, and guests can reserve tickets by emailing puppetworksinfo@gmail.com. After the show, guests are invited to join the troupe for a toast at Park Slope Ale House, located up the block at 356 Sixth Ave. Guests who present the program will receive a discount.

“[Park Slope Ale House] is another small local business that we respect, so they’ve been kind enough to host that for us,” Moore said.

The new location is slated to open Sept. 12 with “Hansel & Gretel.”

While the move is bittersweet and marks the end of an era for the neighborhood institution that has mesmerized generations, Moore said the troupe is grateful for the community support it has received and is looking forward to a new chapter of puppet magic.

“We just feel like we’ve got to keep doing the best job we can because we really owe it to the neighborhood that we’ve been viable for such a long time,” Moore said. “We’re trying to frame it as a positive thing after the devastation of hearing that we had to move. We’re sad about leaving the neighborhood that we kind of grew up in, but we’re excited about a new beginning with this new venue.”

After 36 years of puppet magic in Park Slope, Puppetworks is ready to begin a new act.
