NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) \u2014 Concerns over West Nile are increasing, as the virus has now been detected in mosquitoes tested in every borough of New York City.<\/p>\n
The illness transmitted by mosquitoes can infect humans, birds, horses, and other mammals. However, many infected individuals experience only mild to moderate symptoms or none at all.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Discover more local reporting on our homepage\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n West Nile virus can be more severe for individuals aged 60 and older, or for those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, headaches, tiredness\/weakness, body aches and joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.<\/p>\n The New York City Department of Health monitors mosquito pools citywide to track West Nile virus cases.<\/p>\n As of July 29, 360 pools tested positive for the virus. Staten Island and Queens had the most pools of positive mosquitoes, with 165 and 144, respectively.<\/p>\n 42 positive pools were reported in Brooklyn, 8 in the Bronx, and 1 in Manhattan.<\/p>\n To combat West Nile and to reduce mosquito populations, the city conducts spraying in non-residential areas, including marshes and wetland areas.
