Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he has no plans to cancel his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September, despite calls by Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his arrest if he visits the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to New York,\u201d Netanyahu said in an interview with Fox News\u2019 \u201cHannity\u201d on\u00a0Tuesday, following his White House meeting with President Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to speak the truth in front of this hate-spewing elected official who\u2019s pitting one group of New Yorkers against the others; he\u2019s turning them against New York Jews.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Netanyahu made similar remarks on\u00a0Sunday\u00a0during an appearance on Fox News\u2019 \u201cSunday Morning Futures,\u201d responding to a video in which Mamdani called the Israeli leader\u00a0a \u201dwar\u00a0criminal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mamdani had urged the U.S. government to enforce an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against him and said Netanyahu was not welcome in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Netanyahu said Mamdani is \u201cfomenting hate,\u201d adding that he is \u201csupposed to be the mayor of all New Yorkers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Jews, Christians, Muslims, everyone,\u201d but is \u201ctrying to turn one group against the other.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Israeli prime minister said Jewish residents in New York had told him they were afraid and mentioned a stabbing attack that took place last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Two people, an Asian male and a Jewish male, were stabbed in separate attacks on Manhattan\u2019s Upper West Side, New York police said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a July 23 post on X that the suspect shouted \u201cAllahu Akbar\u201d during both attacks and that investigators were evaluating whether the stabbings\u00a0constituted\u00a0a hate crime.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s accidental that after he made this hate speech against Israel and against me, the next day a Jew was stabbed coming out of a synagogue,\u201d Netanyahu said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The police have not linked the attacks to Mamdani\u2019s remarks.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Netanyahu\u2019s comments came ahead of his U.S. visit for talks with Trump at the president\u2019s invitation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIn our meeting, we will discuss all the issues on the table, with Iran at the forefront. Our goal is clear: to safeguard Israel\u2019s security, strengthen its power, and expand the circle of peace around us,\u201d Netanyahu said in a\u00a0Monday\u00a0post on X.\u00a0<\/p>\n
ICC Warrant Enforcement\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The ICC issued arrest warrants in 2024 for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity connected to the war in Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Israel rejects the allegations, and both Netanyahu and Gallant deny wrongdoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The war began after the terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking hundreds of hostages.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said on\u00a0Monday\u00a0that 73,329 people had been killed in Gaza since the war began on Oct. 7, 2023.\u00a0The ministry does not differentiate between Hamas combatants and civilians when reporting the death toll, which has not been independently verified.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mamdani said in the July 21 video post that his administration had examined whether New York City could execute the ICC warrant if Netanyahu visited the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is clear that we\u00a0do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does,\u201d Mamdani said, urging the Trump administration to\u00a0comply with\u00a0the warrant.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also said that Netanyahu\u00a0was responsible for\u00a0the deaths of more than 73,000 people.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Trump said on July 20 that Netanyahu \u201cwill not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form\u201d while in the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At the start of Israel\u2019s weekly Cabinet meeting on\u00a0Sunday, Netanyahu said he had spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reiterated \u201cthe U.S. intention to act firmly against this organization,\u201d referring to the ICC.\u00a0<\/p>\n
