If there\u2019s one thing Catholic school taught me, it\u2019s to think twice before dancing with the Serpent.<\/p>\n
But if there\u2019s another thing the dance music world has taught me, it\u2019s that when Elrow at Brooklyn\u2019s newly-opened Pacha<\/a> extends the invitation for that exact thing, you say yes and dress for the occasion (the stranger, the better, by the way).<\/p>\n To quote the company\u2019s former international director, Ramesh Satguru, \u201cElrow is an Everyman\u2019s brand. You could take your mum to Elrow. In fact, I\u2019ve taken my mum to Elrow. Because it\u2019s where theatre meets clubbing, the story is there in the nightclub, and it\u2019s giving you something that no one else can provide.\u201d<\/p>\n As a longtime connoisseur of house music, that description spoke to me. As a mother, it spoke to me even more. Elrow makes room for every kind of person, whether you\u2019re a die-hard raver, skeptical first-timer or someone who still has to pack a screaming toddler\u2019s lunch at 6 a.m. the next morning.<\/p>\n The world-famous \u201cexperience brand\u201d was born long before house music entered the mainstream. Its roots trace back more than 150 years to a little caf\u00e9 in Fraga, Spain, which evolved through generations into cinemas, nightclubs, festivals \u2014 and, in 2010 \u2014 the global entertainment phenomenon it is today. Elrow.<\/p>\n But reducing Elrow to a traveling music festival drastically undersells the experience.<\/p>\n Elrow is performance art disguised as nightlife. Like Cirque du Soleil meets rave. A psychedelic amusement park where maximalism isn\u2019t just an aesthetic. It\u2019s the whole freaking religion.\u00a0<\/p>\n This year, the party took over Pacha<\/a>, the buzzy new East Williamsburg venue with the unmistakable twin-cherry logo that now occupies the former site of the begotten-not-made Brooklyn Mirage<\/a>. With its sprawling LED screen, newly installed state-of-the-art sound system, and 30,000-square-foot open-air dance floor, the space feels purpose-built for these kind of theatrics.<\/p>\n It didn\u2019t hurt that Saturday night\u2019s lineup already sold itself, all accoutrements aside.<\/p>\n Vibe-setting duo Coco & Breezy<\/a> warmed the room into a hypnotic groove. Monki Kiddo slid into a B2B set with Bastian Bux, whose precision reminded me exactly why he\u2019s one of the tech house scene\u2019s most dependable musical architects. And Elrow resident Tini Gessler delivered her signature cocktail of percussion and melody, weaving together ethereal blends that melted time and bent space.<\/p>\n Despite being in such close proximity to these star selectors from our comfy backstage perch (bring your ear protection, because the bass is banging), it was the crowd that really held my gaze. Every actor \u2014 paid or just part of the mob \u2014 is vying for your attention, to the point that the DJ booth almost feels like an afterthought. Almost.<\/p>\n Beside me, a man dressed as a nun dances so feverishly that his scraggly pink wig rips off his head. Another character places a glob of glitter in my palm while shaking in nothing but a sarong and skin-tight Speedo. Several ten-foot-tall stilt walkers tower above the crowd like surreal deities. Serpents materialize and dissolve across the screens, hovering somewhere between birth, death and hallucination.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re feeling overstimulated just reading this, take that feeling and triple it.<\/p>\n The evening unfolded exactly as expected, which is to say, it was completely and utterly unexpected. And for face-value tickets starting around $40, you\u2019re probably not imagining the over-the-top production that Elrow delivers.<\/p>\n Acrobats swing overhead. Giant, floating inflatable eyeballs stare into the unseen part of your soul. Fluorescent serpents slither across LED walls. Confetti falls with such force that I feel three-years-old again. Yes, it\u2019s a little otherworldly, a touch hedonistic, and that \u2014 very unapologetically \u2014 is the point.<\/p>\n Just ten minutes at Elrow is almost sure to start to feel like a lucid dream or psychedelic experience, no drugs necessary. Though judging by all the glazed-over eyes and mysterious lollipops and substances in circulation, many attendees had likely crossed into another dimension well before the first drop landed.<\/p>\n My friend and I arrived at the venue just after 11 p.m., knowing the real musical magic doesn\u2019t happen until the early hours of the morning. We arrived ready for the hit tracks \u2014 Bastian Bux\u2019s \u201cRoots\u201d, Tini Gessler\u2019s \u201cBreak\u201d, among others \u2014 all of which hit with equal force.\u00a0<\/p>\n And while we were starving for all the chart-toppers, I quickly remembered the real fun is getting a bite of these artists\u2019 unreleased tracks. Luckily, Elrow affords an experimental setting where you can expect to be spoiled with moments that couldn\u2019t feel less manufactured.<\/p>\n Admittedly, half the time, I couldn\u2019t make out a single lyric, aside from the hypnotic \u201cplay it loud\u201d refrain that surfaced during Tini Gessler\u2019s set. But that almost felt irrelevant. In house music, vocals are just the cherries on top of the performance. <\/p>\n The real language is the beat: the suspension, the restraint, the elongated build that always results in a perfectly-timed release. When a crowd moves in total unison to sounds they\u2019ve never heard before, you\u2019ve witnessed something far more moving than a hit track. At Elrow, you become part of the experiment.<\/p>\n Dancing with the Serpent probably wasn\u2019t what my Catholic school teachers had in mind. Then again, neither was finding salvation in a expertly-placed drop.
