Disastrous communism? Failedsocialism? Welcome relief for hungry families? Just another political stunt? Reactions to Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani’s unveiling of plans for his five city-owned grocery stores read like aretail Rorschach test.<\/p>\n
While it is still much too soon to calculate the financial and brand impact of Mamdani’s network of municipal grocery stores — part of his campaign promise tomake New York City more affordable — this week’s press conference<\/a> offered plenty to get people talking.<\/p>\n A key component of theplan is a 30% discount on produce, meat and pantry staples. The city projects those discounts could save New Yorkers who shop there about 15%, which translates to an average of $90 a month, or $1,000a year. The discounts are for everyone, regardless of income, and prices are locked in.<\/p>\n He also announced an RFP for grocery companies looking to serve as operators at one or more of thestores.<\/p>\n Food prices have been a core component of Mamdani’s Affordability Agenda, based on the finding that 40% of families there struggle to afford food.<\/p>\n At Hunts Point in theBronx, where the first store is scheduled to open by the end of 2027, 77% of households struggle to pay for basics. A recent poll finds that 80% of New Yorkers have some concern about food prices.<\/p>\n All five locations are scheduled to open before the end of his term, and the mayor has budgeted $70 million.<\/p>\n While national retailers including Aldi, Stop and Shop, Trader Joe’s,Target, Whole Foods Market and Wegmans all have a meaningful presence in New York City, bodegas are an essential part of city life. City officials have said 90% of New Yorkers shop in these smallretailers at least once per week, and about two-thirds visit a bodega daily.<\/p>\n The New York Times reports<\/a>\u00a0that some smaller food retailers are fuming. Frank Garcia, chairman of the MulticulturalBusiness Coalition, tells the Times the effort \u00a0will “put our businesses out of business.” And Newsmax says that coalition, an organization started earlier this year to combat theMayor’s plan, plans to sue.<\/p>\n The announcement ignited especially fiery coverage in conservative media outlets. Fox<\/a> blasts the initiative as “an illusion:” Because profit margins arealready so thin for grocery retailers, several experts tell the outlet, such a steep discount will generate losses, ultimately paid for by taxpayers.<\/p>\n The Wall Street Journal, which isfond of attacking Mamdani’s socialism and sometimes compares him to Mao, has previously described the effort as “Mamdanivs. Bodegas<\/a>.”<\/p>\n
