Former Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh is encouraging people to consider careers with the New York State Canal Corporation as the agency looks to recruit workers to help maintain the state\u2019s historic canal system.<\/p>\n
Walsh, who was appointed director of the Canal Corporation in February after serving two terms as Syracuse Mayor, appeared in a new recruitment video highlighting the variety of careers available across the 524-mile canal system.<\/p>\n
The Canal Corporation is hiring for positions in engineering, operations, maintenance, customer service and seasonal work.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019re looking for a career that\u2019s different from anything else out there, I\u2019d love for you to think about joining our team,\u201d Walsh said.<\/p>\n
Walsh also emphasized what he called \u201ccanal craft\u201d \u2014 the specialized skills developed by employees who operate and maintain the system.<\/p>\n
\u201cAround here, we talk about canal craft. It\u2019s the hands-on skills, the problem-solving, the traditions you only pick up by working on the system,\u201d Walsh said. \u201cYou really can\u2019t find it anywhere else in New York, or anywhere else, period.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Canal Corporation oversees New York\u2019s 524-mile canal system, which includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals. The network supports recreation, tourism, transportation and local economies across upstate New York.<\/p>\n
