STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The iconic Macy\u2019s billboard on the corner of 34th Street and Broadway in New York City is no more.<\/p>\n

The red bag-shaped billboard near the Macy\u2019s Herald Square store came down last week \u2014 exposing the old building beneath, according to Gothamist<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to the city Department of Buildings records, it will be replaced with two new LED signs, the media outlet reported.<\/p>\n

The agency issued two permits to the owners of the small building located on the block of Macy\u2019s, which included the removal of the iconic sign and another for the two LED signs installation, according to Gothamist.<\/p>\n

The massive sign has been in place since at least the 1950s, with wording like \u201cThis is Macy\u2019s,\u201d according to ABC7<\/a>. In 1992, there was a white sign with red outlines declaring Macy\u2019s \u201cThe World\u2019s Largest Store.\u201d By 1994, an early iteration of the red bag was on the sign, according to ABC7.<\/p>\n

The five-story building dates back to the early 1900s and is one of the \u201choldouts\u201d of New York City. The term is used to describe buildings whose owners didn\u2019t sell the plots of land they stand on to major developers and remain as small buildings among larger ones, according to Gothamist.<\/p>\n
