Manhattan Theatre Club<\/a> has added Micaela Diamond<\/a> (Parade<\/a>)\u00a0and Will Pullen<\/a> (To Kill a Mockingbird) to the cast of its\u00a0upcoming revival of Clifford Odets<\/a>‘\u00a0Awake and Sing, set to take the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre beginning December 15\u00a0ahead of a January 7, 2027, opening night. Tyne Rafaeli<\/a> (Data)\u00a0is directing the new staging.<\/p>\n

Diamond will be Hennie Berger to Pullen’s Ralph Berger, joining\u00a0previously announced stars Danny Burstein<\/a> (Moulin Rouge! The Musical<\/a>)\u00a0as Uncle Morty, Jessica Hecht<\/a> (Eureka Day<\/a>)\u00a0as Bessie Berger, and Jeremy Shamos<\/a> (Clybourne Park<\/a>)\u00a0as Myron Berger. Further casting is to be announced.<\/p>\n

First produced on Broadway in 1935, the play follows three generations of the Berger family living in a cramped tenement in 1930s Bronx. The work established Odets as a Broadway powerhouse, and has since become a frequently produced title in NYC and beyond, including four (soon to be five) Broadway revivals; the 2006 staging was a Tony winner for Best Revival of a Play.<\/p>\n

“Awake and Sing!<\/a> is one of the great masterpieces of our canon\u2014it makes you laugh and breaks your heart in one fell swoop,\u201d said MTC Artistic Director Nicki Hunter in an earlier statement. \u201cThough Odets wrote this story of a family caught between the life they imagined and the one they were saddled with nearly a century ago, its questions of ambition and sacrifice feel as timely as ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

MTC’s upcoming\u00a0Broadway season also includes Jocelyn Bioh<\/a>‘s School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play<\/a>, beginning previews September 8; and a world premiere for David Hare<\/a>‘s Montauk, starring Laura Linney<\/a> in spring 2027. Off-Broadway, previews will begin October 10 for Nick Payne<\/a>‘s The Unbelievers, making its American premiere.<\/p>\n
