Steamed tenants in an Alphabet City apartment complex haven\u2019t showered in two months after Legionnaires\u2019 disease-causing bacteria were found in the water system \u2014 with many raising a stink over Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s focus uptown and beyond.<\/p>\n
The residents at Haven Plaza \u2014 alongside local lawmakers \u2014 held a rally Thursday blasting the confused, plodding response by city health officials and the five-building Avenue C complex\u2019s management.<\/p>\n

The slow-motion effort not only overlapped with a separate outbreak on the Upper East Side, but also unfolded at the same time as Mamdani\u2019s attention-grabbing call to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> and botched rollout<\/a> of a list of luxury second homes that \u201cmay\u201d be hit by a new pied-\u00e0-terre tax.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s not acknowledging us at all down here,\u201d said Kathy Nataadiningrat, who has lived in Haven Plaza for 42 years. \u201cEverything is uptown, not us little people down here.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s been no attention down here until now that everyone\u2019s here today.\u201d<\/p>\n As Nataadiningrat and other frustrated tenants rallied for attention, the social media-loving socialist mayor went on a splashy \u201csite-seeing\u201d tour on a double-decker bus to three new housing complexes.<\/p>\n Haven Plaza was built in the late 1960s as part of an urban renewal program.<\/p>\n The 371-unit development, run by Catholic Home of New York and Wavecrest Management, has since undergone a major renovation, but many tenants argued recent problems show their home is being forgotten.<\/p>\n Some tenants took Mayor Zohran Mamdani to task. The positive test for Legionella bacteria in June prompted a flurry of what tenants contended was confusing advice from city health officials and inaction from management.<\/p>\n Many tenants, including Nataadiningrat, said health officials variously told them to take baths with hoses, avoid showering or to boil water before bathing.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no sense of urgency to actually resolve this problem,\u201d said Dana Cruz, the tenants\u2019 association president. \u201cOur tenants have been directed to not shower.\u201d<\/p>\n Tenants and pols held a rally highlighting the complex\u2019s plight Thursday. She argued Wavecrest and Catholic Homes have refused requests for mobile showers, rent relief and drinking water as tenants waited for a plan.<\/p>\n \u201cResidents still do not know what this plan looks like,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have no idea the vendor, the chemicals, how long, the timing \u2014 none of it.\u201d<\/p>\n Here\u2019s the latest on the NYC Legionnaires\u2019 disease outbreak that has rattled the Upper East Side:<\/p>\n A copy of a health department remediation plan provided by resident Simeon Rose, 63, shows plumbing work kicked off Tuesday. The plan calls for periodic water shut offs and a 30-day treatment period.<\/p>\n \u201cThis neighborhood is always the end of the list,\u201d Rose said. \u201cDuring (Superstorm) Sandy, it took us six, eight weeks to get electricity, which is ironic because we are right next to ConEd.\u201d<\/p>\n Lawmakers, including lefty City Councilman Harvey Epstein, demanded action. For months, uncertainty of their water.\u201d<\/p>\n Mamdani likewise faced a barrage of criticism for his administration\u2019s response to the Upper East Side outbreak that killed seven people, with City Council Speaker Julie Menin setting up an oversight hearing to demand answers.<\/p>\n Menin also proposed legislation requiring the city take proactive steps to identify cooling towers that building owners failed to test for Legionella bacteria and automatically disinfect them as a precaution.<\/p>\n In a joint statement, Catholic Homes and Wavecrest Management officials said the city health department approval their remediation plan.<\/p>\n \u201cThis includes implementing a full water treatment and disinfection plan,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cResidents should continue to follow DOHMH\u2019s recommended guidelines and will be notified of any service disruptions.\u201d<\/p>\n City Hall and health department officials didn\u2019t return requests for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They aren\u2019t showering Zo with compliments.
