{"id":311343,"date":"2026-08-01T04:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T04:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/311343\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T04:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T04:14:13","slug":"nyc-businesses-lose-thousands-near-building-with-buckled-columns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/311343\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC businesses lose thousands near building with buckled columns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (PIX11) \u2013 While so many people were worried about a potential collapse of a <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/did-the-old-nyc-pfizer-building-collapse-not-quite\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/did-the-old-nyc-pfizer-building-collapse-not-quite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">high-rise o<\/a>n East 42nd Street earlier this month, owners of the restaurants around the corner had their own worries as well.<\/p>\n<p>Lost revenue and spoiled food due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/manhattan-building-in-frozen-zone-declared-safe-for-return\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/manhattan-building-in-frozen-zone-declared-safe-for-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">frozen zone<\/a> were big concerns.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\tDiscover more local reporting on our homepage\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sushi Yasuda is arguably one of the top sushi restaurants in the city, but it had the misfortune of having possibly one of the worst locations in the city for the month of July.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because Sushi Yasuda and two other Japanese restaurants, a trade school, and a hotel were all part of the frozen zone after two Steel columns began to buckle at the construction site of the former Pfizer building on East 42nd Street.<\/p>\n<p>With City officials worried about the potential for a high-rise collapse, the block of 43rd St. between Third and 2nd Avenues was shut down to pedestrians and vehicles for close to three weeks from July 7th to July 24th.<\/p>\n<p>And that meant big losses to the small businesses on this block.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing locked in this frozen zone for two to three weeks may have cost us in the ballpark of $300,000,\u201d Scott Rosenberg, co-owner of Sushi Yasuda, told PIX11 News. \u201cOn Tuesdays, we get our special fish delivery, but the fire department came and shut it down, saying get out and bring nothing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>At Yakiniku Toraji across the street, employees were placed on furlough for close to three weeks and encouraged to apply for unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was tough, especially on employees,\u201d Kenny Toguchi, manager of Yakiniku Toraji, told PIX11 News. \u201d Everybody lost income; tough on the restaurant, too.
