{"id":311576,"date":"2026-08-01T17:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T17:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/311576\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T17:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T17:30:08","slug":"mayor-mamdani-extends-pied-a-terre-tax-exemption-deadline-after-confusing-rollout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/311576\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Mamdani extends pied-\u00e0-terre tax exemption deadline after confusing rollout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"q5xpl\">Panicked New York City homeowners who want to apply for an exemption from Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s pied-\u00e0-terre tax now have an additional month to do so, officials announced Saturday.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"2kbcs\">Residents across the five boroughs who feel their homes are being unfairly targeted by the mayor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/did-mamdanis-tax-the-rich-video-outside-a-billionaires-nyc-penthouse-cross-a-line\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">new tax on secondary residences<\/a> previously had until Aug. 21 to file appeals. They now have until Sept. 18 to prove that they live in those places full-time, according to Mamdani and Department of Finance Commissioner Richard Lee.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"cfh9g\">In a statement with the update, Mamdani called the pied-\u00e0-terretax \u201can important new tool\u201d to help the city collect revenue for safety projects, parks and other investments.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"e4e2f\">\u201cWe are announcing the extension of the exemption application deadline to ensure that New Yorkers who received the \u2018You may be subject to &#8230;\u2019 letters have the time and information they need,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"74bai\">The pied-\u00e0-terre tax rollout has been <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/confusion-reigns-over-eligibility-for-mayor-mamdanis-pied-%C3%A0-terre-tax\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">wrought with confusion and frustration<\/a>. In late July, the Department of Finance posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/finance\/property\/property-assessments.page#\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">database<\/a> of more than 900,000 properties that \u201cmay\u201d be subject to the new surcharge \u2014 causing some to believe their homes were mistakenly subject to the tax.
