{"id":311632,"date":"2026-08-01T19:31:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T19:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/311632\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T19:31:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T19:31:14","slug":"yankees-trade-disappointing-camilo-doval-to-pirates-one-year-after-hyped-deadline-stunner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/311632\/","title":{"rendered":"Yankees trade disappointing Camilo Doval to Pirates one year after hyped deadline stunner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO \u2013 The most tantalizing and frustrating member of the Yankees bullpen is on his way out.<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees are trading Camilo Doval to the Pirates for prospects Omar Alfonzo and Luis Cruz, The Post\u2019s Jon Heyman\u2019s and Joel Sherman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Joelsherman1\/status\/2083619621366555075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">confirmed Saturday,<\/a> a year after he was part of their deadline haul to remake the bullpen.<\/p>\n<p>Doval, who is under team control through 2027 and still owed about $2 million this season \u2013$750,000 of which the Pirates are assuming \u2013 pitched to a 4.54 ERA across 44 games this season.<\/p>\n<p>His inability to deliver in big spots had relegated him to mostly low-leverage situations of late, part of the reason why the Yankees are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/31\/sports\/what-to-remember-when-we-instantly-grade-yankees-trade-deadline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">still looking to add an impact arm<\/a> to their bullpen before Monday\u2019s deadline.<\/p>\n<p>But the hard-throwing Doval will no longer be part of the equation, which may be addition by subtraction, even as the Yankees had held out hope that they could fix him.<\/p>\n<p>The righty showed his talent in flashes \u2013 with his 100-mph cutters \u2013 but not nearly often enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.52154532;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40154206\" width=\"898\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/new-york-yankees-pitcher-camilo-133411627.jpg\" alt=\"New York Yankees pitcher Camilo Doval reacts after giving up runs to the Minnesota Twins.\" class=\"wp-image-40154206\"  \/>Camilo Doval struggled with the Yankees. Murray<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees were planning on calling up Yovanny Cruz from Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre to take Doval\u2019s spot in the bullpen ahead of Saturday night\u2019s game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.<\/p>\n<p>Alfonzo, the son of former big league catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, is a 22-year-old, lefty-hitting catcher and first baseman.<\/p>\n<p>In 60 games at Double-A Altoona this season, he was batting .239 with a .757 OPS and nine home runs. <\/p>\n<p>Alfonzo just lost his mother and sister in the Venezuelan earthquake earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.47126437;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40154205\" width=\"868\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/reacts-walks-back-dugout-ending-131502907.jpg\" alt=\"New York Yankees pitcher Camilo Doval (75) reacts as he walks back to the dugout after ending the 8th inning.\" class=\"wp-image-40154205\"  \/>Doval was acquired last deadline from the Giants. Robert Sabo for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Cruz is an 18-year-old outfielder that was playing in the Dominican Summer League, batting .313 with a .856 OPS and seven steals in 17 games.<\/p>\n<p>Alfonzo was the Pirates\u2019 No. 17 prospect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/pirates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">per MLB.com<\/a>, three spots behind Rafael Flores Jr., the catcher the Yankees sent to Pittsburgh as the headliner in the David Bednar trade last summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees also sent another catcher to the Pirates in that deal, Edgleen Perez, who is now their No. 8 prospect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"CHICAGO \u2013 The most tantalizing and frustrating member of the Yankees bullpen is on his way out.
