Major changes could soon be coming to the B103 bus route as part of the MTA’s ongoing Bus Network Redesign, and some riders aren’t convinced the plan will improve their commute.<\/p>\n
The B103 stop at Flatbush and Nostrand avenues is one of the route’s busiest locations. Under a proposal from the MTA, even more riders could be using the area as the transit agency looks to streamline service and improve bus speeds across Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
Currently, the B103 runs approximately 12 miles between southeastern Brooklyn and Downtown Brooklyn. Under the proposed redesign, that route would be shortened significantly.<\/p>\n
The new B103 would terminate at Flatbush Junction rather than continue into Downtown Brooklyn. At the same time, the MTA plans to create a new extension that would provide service from parts of East New York through Canarsie and into Midwood.<\/p>\n
For riders traveling to neighborhoods such as Kensington, Ditmas Park, Park Slope and Downtown Brooklyn, the MTA is recommending alternative transit options, including the 2 and 5 subway lines, as well as the B41, B81 and B37 bus routes.<\/p>\n
Some commuters worry those alternatives may not be able to handle the additional passengers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s going to put the B41 in a backed-up situation, because there\u2019s not enough B41s that come,\u201d said Michelle, a B103 commuter. \u201cAnd when the train stops running, the B41 doesn\u2019t pick up to carry the load for the 2 train or the 5.\u201d<\/p>\n
Riders will have an opportunity to weigh in on the proposal. The Mayor’s Office of Community and Ethnic Media, along with city and transit officials, is scheduled to host a public meeting on the proposed changes next Thursday.<\/p>\n
