Memories of Mookie Wilson’s ground ball rolling through Bill Buckner’s legs, Ray Knight’s World Series heroics, Dwight “Doc” Gooden’s dominance, Darryl Strawberry’s towering home runs, and Jesse Orosco tossing his glove high into the air after recording the final out came rushing back.

The 1986 Mets were more than just a championship baseball team. They became a cultural phenomenon, capturing the attention of sports fans across America. Their personalities were larger than life. They weren’t perfect, but they were overflowing with talent, confidence, and swagger. Four decades later, they remain one of the most recognizable championship teams in baseball history.

Perhaps no one summed up the passage of time better than Darryl Strawberry, who joked to the crowd, “I can’t believe some of us are still alive,” drawing plenty of laughter from teammates and fans alike.

Adding another New York connection to the festivities, actress and singer Jamie-Lynn Sigler performed the national anthem. Sigler has close ties to the Mets family, as her father-in-law is former Mets star Lenny Dykstra.

While the crowd wasn’t as large as many expected—perhaps a reflection of the disappointment surrounding the current Mets season—that didn’t diminish the emotion of the ceremony. There were loud cheers, heartfelt applause, and even a few tears as the organization honored members of the championship team who are no longer with us.

One of the most touching moments came during a video tribute recognizing those who have passed away, including beloved manager Davey Johnson, who died in September 2025. Every former player wore a commemorative patch honoring their championship skipper.

Another emotional scene unfolded when Ray Knight, the 1986 World Series MVP, was introduced in a wheelchair and escorted onto the field by former teammate Howard Johnson. Knight was the heart and soul of a club filled with tough, fearless competitors, and his appearance served as a reminder that 40 years have passed since that magical season.

For a few hours, however, none of that mattered.

The standings, the frustrations of the current season, and the questions surrounding today’s Mets all faded into the background. In their place were smiles, memories, and a celebration of the team that forever changed baseball in Queens.

For one afternoon, everything felt Amazin’ again, and Mets fans were reminded why the 1986 championship team will always hold a special place in their hearts.

For one weekend, New York Mets fans were able to forget about the struggles of the current season…

[37
9,24,63,122,124,123
post-312247","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-queens","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-queens","tag-queens-headlines","tag-queens-news
["GET
