{"id":313060,"date":"2026-08-04T01:40:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T01:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/313060\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T01:40:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T01:40:08","slug":"judge-allows-n-y-bans-of-local-agreements-with-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/313060\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge allows N.Y. bans of local agreements with ICE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge has denied the federal government\u2019s motion for an injunction on New York\u2019s new immigration state law that bans formal agreements between local governments and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), known as 287(g) agreements, while blocking part of the law that prohibits ICE agents from wearing masks.<\/p>\n<p>According to a ruling Monday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, the judge sided with the state in arguing the ban of 287(g) agreements is \u201can appropriate means of furthering New York\u2019s legitimate interests in protecting public welfare and choosing how state and local resources are expended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge also ruled that the mask ban can have a chilling effect on enforcement of federal law by interfering with the safety protection of federal enforcement officers.<\/p>\n<p>The laws at hand were <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/central-ny\/politics\/2026\/05\/29\/hochul-signs-measures-to-limit-ice-cooperation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">part of legislation passed by the New York Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul in May<\/a> in response to the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policy. The measures also prohibit ICE agents from wearing masks and protects sensitive locations \u2014 including hospitals, childcare centers, schools, polling places and churches \u2014 from ICE enforcement activity without a judicial warrant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we have said from the start, New York\u2019s ban on 287(g) agreements is legal and will keep our communities safe.
