A few hours after Brian Cashman said he tried to improve the Yankees bullpen at the trade deadline and came up short, one of his offseason additions helped cost them in a crushing loss at the Stadium.<\/p>\n

Robert Sabo for the NY Post<\/p>\n But St. Louis wasn\u2019t done tormenting Chivilli, as two batters later, Jimmy Crooks crushed a two-run shot out to right to put the Yankees in a four-run hole.<\/p>\n And Alec Burleson then went deep for his third homer of the game \u2014 and the third home run allowed by Chivilli in the seven-run inning.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel really good about the pen,\u201d Aaron Boone said. \u201cYou\u2019re gonna have an occasional night like this. Jason Szenes for the NY Post<\/p>\n The bullpen has been taxed and Boone noted that the lineup hasn\u2019t given them much margin for error for a long period of time.<\/p>\n But Monday was especially rough for Chivilli, who managed to complete the inning, but needed 37 pitches to do so and was optioned to Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre after the loss.<\/p>\n Prior to the game, Cashman acknowledged he entered the deadline looking for relievers. <\/p>\n He was unable to land one and expressed optimism that a return to health for Carlos Rod\u00f3n from elbow inflammation would push one current starter into the pen, with Clarke Schmidt potentially joining the bullpen after he completes his rehab from Tommy John surgery.<\/p>\n But that plan didn\u2019t help the Yankees on Monday.<\/p>\n The miserable night started with Cam Schlittler delivering a clunker, knocked out of the game after just three innings and 83 pitches.<\/p>\n New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler (31) gives up a 2-run home run to St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson (41) during the first inning at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY, on Monday, August 3, 2026. Robert Sabo for NY Post<\/p>\n In his brief outing \u2014 Schlittler\u2019s shortest of the season \u2014 the right-hander gave up four runs and tied a season high by walking five batters.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t have an excuse,\u201d Schlittler said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t my night.
