Between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., independent galleries across the neighborhood open their doors for free exhibition receptions, welcoming artists, collectors, curators and curious visitors to preview new shows.

With a couple of galleries concentrated between 10th and 11th Avenues in the West 20s, it’s possible to spend an entire evening hopping from one exhibition to another – all without buying a ticket. One of the regular stops is 548 W 28th St, a multi-story gallery building that houses several contemporary art spaces, including Atlantic Gallery, Viridian Artists, and Carter Burden Gallery, allowing visitors to explore multiple exhibitions under one roof.

With different opening schedules and dozens of galleries spread through the neighborhood, knowing where to start can be daunting; fortunately, one Instagram account dedicated to tracking gallery openings has become a go-to resource for people looking to plan their Thursday night gallery crawl. @thirstygallerina, which has more than 136,000 followers, compiles a weekly list of gallery openings across New York City and posts it every Wednesday.

Its creator shared that the page first gained widespread attention after being featured by another New York-focused social media account in 2023. “Our account just blew up after that,” the creator said. “People had all these questions, and we had to quickly adapt to educate the audience. This is what a gallery is. This is what an opening is. This is where you can find them. They’re free.”

5th floor, 548 W 28th St.Photo by Annabelle Tang

As the audience expanded, so did the account’s reach. What initially focused on Manhattan now includes gallery openings across all five boroughs, along with Jersey City and Long Island.

The creator said the goal is not only to help people discover free fine art events but also to encourage them to feel comfortable engaging with the city’s art community.

“We realized just how important it was to be responsible for forming this community and making sure that we were educating people and continuing to work to make those people feel welcome – maybe not just in the gallery opening space, but in the art world in general,” the creator said.

The account also operates as a submission platform where artists can submit information about new exhibitions and projects. Many of these submissions come from artists staging pop-up exhibitions or showing work in temporary spaces, helping independent projects gain exposure that they might otherwise miss. One month they got 200 submissions.

Beyond connecting people with exhibitions, the account has also become intertwined with personal milestones. One person told the creators they had been undecided about moving to the city until they spent an evening exploring Chelsea’s galleries using the account’s list.

“He said it was that night that I decided I want to move to New York,” the creator recalled.

One follower shared that her first date with her now-fiancé was spent exploring galleries through one of the account’s weekly crawls.

Followers of @thirstygallerina may notice a quieter calendar during this summer. Many galleries mount exhibitions that stay on view through August after participating in international art fairs, before launching major fall exhibitions in early September. “The big fall shows open the first week of September,” the creator said. “Chelsea still has lots and lots of galleries. They just may not have had big summer shows happening right now.”

Whether seasoned collectors or visitors simply looking for a free evening out, Thursday gallery openings have become one of New York City’s most accessible cultural traditions and a cornerstone of the city’s art community. By making the weekly openings easier to navigate, accounts like @thirstygallerina have helped lower the barrier to entry, connecting more people with artists, galleries and one of Chelsea’s longest-running weekly rituals.

Every Thursday evening, Chelsea’s independent galleries throw open their doors for free opening receptions, and Instagram account @thirstygallerina…

[8
118404,1149,35596,9,24,55,54,56
post-313346","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-city","tag-thirstygallerina","tag-art","tag-art-galleries","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-new-york-city-headlines","tag-new-york-city-news","tag-ny
["GET
