\t\t Search our comprehensive guide to caribbean events in NYC<\/a> for more local events \u2014 or submit your own<\/a>!<\/p>\n On Saturday, Aug. 8, Brooklyn Children\u2019s Museum (BCM) is inviting families to \u201cCelebrate the Caribbean,\u201d an annual festival presented in partnership with the Brooklyn-based West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).<\/p>\n BCM said the \u201cfun-filled, family-friendly event\u201d features Caribbean musical performances, art-making, food, dance, and more, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \u201c\u2019Celebrate the Caribbean\u2019 offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the rich diversity of the Caribbean Diaspora and enjoy a wide array of performers and vendors,\u201d it said.\u00a0<\/p>\n Steps away from Brooklyn\u2019s Little Caribbean neighborhood, BCM said the kid-centric festival will celebrate the local community\u2019s heritage with activities, including a Carnival headdress workshop, steel drum performance, dancers, moko jumbies (stilt walkers), and more.<\/p>\n BCM said \u201cCelebrate the Caribbean\u201d programming includes: A carnival headdress and bracelet workshop in BCM\u2019s ColorLab Art Studio with WIADCA, the West Indian American Day Carnival Association; an introduction to the history and the basics of playing the steel pan drum with Harmony Music Makers; and a fun Afro-Caribbean dance performance with CarNYval Dancers.<\/p>\n Other events are: A Caribbean martial art workshop introducing Kalinda, which combines music, movement, storytelling, rhythm studies, oral tradition, and collaborative participation, presented by Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival and Something Positive; A story time session with Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival that teaches families about the origins of steelpan in celebration of World Steelpan Day; and\u00a0 Youth Dancers and Moko Jumbies (stilt walkers) in colorful costumes who will lead a dance performance featuring the rhythms of the Caribbean with the award-winning Sesame Flyers Youth Company.<\/p>\n BCM said a procession to the rooftop dance party, among others, will augment the carnival.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \u201cFeel the rhythm of carnival culture with steel drums, stilt walkers, and costumed dancers at this island family f\u00eate,\u201d it said.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Carnival at Brooklyn Children\u2019s Museum.
