(WCAX) &#8211; A former state prison in New York is officially getting boarded up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">We told you back in January about the state\u2019s plans to decommission the shuttered \u201cMoriah Shock\u201d prison this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Town officials in Moriah say work started earlier this summer, with construction crews shutting off the lights and water, and boarding up the windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Moriah Town Supervisor Matt Brassard said they\u2019re worried the former facility will eventually attract vandals, and they don\u2019t want it to end up like another former state prison, Camp Gabriels, which sits decaying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWhy waste taxpayers\u2019 dollars when you have facilities and buildings, not just in Moriah Shock but all of the other closed prisons? Why aren\u2019t we using them?\u201d Brassard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">New York Gov. Kathy Hochul included Moriah Shock as one of the three vacant state prisons she\u2019d like to see on a potential constitutional amendment that would allow for development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Camp Gabriels in Franklin County is also on that list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The earliest voters could see the amendment on the ballot is 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WCAX.
