A new cultural tradition is set to debut in Brooklyn this week with a celebration dedicated entirely to Jamaican heritage.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn will host the inaugural Jamaica Rising Day Parade<\/a>\u00a0on Aug. 8. Organizers describe the event as New York City’s first parade dedicated exclusively to Jamaican heritage.<\/p>\n

The free event begins at 11 a.m. at Bob Marley Boulevard, at the intersection of Church and Flatbush avenues, before traveling north along Flatbush Avenue through central Brooklyn.\u00a0The parade is expected to fill Flatbush Avenue with Jamaica’s national colors of black, green and gold. Its singular focus on Jamaican culture distinguishes it from broader Caribbean celebrations held elsewhere in the city.<\/p>\n

The celebration highlights Brooklyn’s longstanding ties to one of the largest Jamaican communities outside Jamaica. According to Neilsberg<\/a>, the Jamaican population exceeds\u00a0300,000 in New York City, more than 80,000 of which reside in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Organized by the Jamaica Rising Day Parade organization<\/a>,\u00a0the celebration marks Jamaica’s independence season.\u00a0As Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on Aug. 6, 1962, the event coincides with annual independence celebrations taking place in Jamaican communities around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The parade will feature cultural organizations, schools, churches, youth groups, athletes, entertainers, marching bands and community organizations. Local vendors will offer Jamaican food, beverages, crafts and other goods along the route, creating a daylong celebration of the island’s culture.<\/p>\n

Organizers expect thousands of attendees to participate in the inaugural event.<\/p>\n
