Heliot Ramos<\/a> found out about his trade to the Yankees<\/a> the same way many people did.<\/p>\n

Eager to escape the swirling rumors before Monday\u2019s MLB trade deadline, the 26-year-old outfielder plugged his phone into its charger and went to the gym.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw on TV, \u2018Yankees acquire Heliot Ramos.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Oh.\u2019 It\u2019s crazy,\u201d Ramos recalled Tuesday before debuting with his new team in the Bronx.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first found out about the news, I started shaking a little bit, because obviously I didn\u2019t know anything else,\u201d said Ramos, who came over from the San Francisco Giants. \u201cBut then I realized, like, \u2018Man, I\u2019m going to be a New York Yankee.\u2019 Like, that\u2019s crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Yankees traded a pair of minor-leaguers<\/a> \u2014 including High-A left-hander Henry Lalane, their No. 5 prospect \u2014 to the rebuilding Giants for Ramos in an effort to upgrade their injury-ravaged lineup.<\/p>\n

Ramos started in left field and batted clean-up in Tuesday night\u2019s 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, going 0-for-4.<\/p>\n

\u201cI talked to Heliot today about right and left field, and he\u2019s comfortable in either spot, so I might play with that a little bit,\u201d said manager Aaron Boone, who used Trent Grisham in center field and Spencer Jones in right.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut first day here, where he\u2019s played mostly left this year, I wanted him in there in that spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

A former top prospect, Ramos was an All-Star in 2024, and he eclipsed 20 home runs in each of the past two seasons.<\/p>\n

He is batting .260 with nine homers and a .718 OPS this year.<\/p>\n

The Yankees expect Ramos to play extensively over the next few weeks \u2014 regardless of the pitching matchup \u2014 as outfielders Aaron Judge (rib) and Cody Bellinger (hamstring) and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (calf) work their ways back from the injured list.<\/p>\n

But even when the Yankees are at full strength, the righty-swinging Ramos should get plenty of at-bats versus left-handed pitching, against whom he boasts an .835 OPS this season and an .847 mark over his five-year career.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, his strength is against the left-handed [pitching] side,\u201d general manager Brian Cashman said. \u201cWhen we face those, Boone will have a choice to deploy it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramos was one of two offensive additions made by the Yankees before the deadline, joining lefty-swinging Luis Garc\u00eda Jr., who made his team debut \u2014 and homered in it<\/a> \u2014 on Monday night.<\/p>\n

The Yankees then called up top prospect George Lombard Jr., who drilled a solo home run in his MLB debut<\/a> on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

The moves came amid a prolonged scuffle by the Yankees\u2019 offense, which scored 5.2 runs per game with Judge in the lineup but is averaging just under 4.0 runs per game in the two-plus months without him.<\/p>\n

All three players are expected to be parts of the Yankees\u2019 future, too. Garc\u00eda remains under team control through next season, while Ramos arrived with three more years of team control after this one.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like one of the guys told me, \u2018They picked me for a reason, right?\u2019 I\u2019m just here to give my best,\u201d Ramos said. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting, of course. The standards of this organization are super high. I\u2019m just trying to keep that standard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramos was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where he grew up appreciating the Yankees\u2019 century-old rivalry with the Boston Red Sox. Derek Jeter and Puerto Rican-born Jorge Posada were among the players he admired.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Ramos took the field that Jeter and Posada once called home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think anybody would be proud to be a New York Yankee,\u201d Ramos said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an organization that, right now, is on a good run. I just want to contribute.
