Brooklyn accounted for 22 fewer homicides, representing 47 % of the city’s overall homicide decline and 24 fewer shooting incidents, making up 85 % of the citywide shooting reduction.

“For New York City’s most populous borough to go 29 consecutive days without a murder, during the summer months when violence has historically been at its highest, is an extraordinary achievement that would have been almost unimaginable just a few years ago,” said District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.

The only homicides in July occurred on July 1 and July 2. No additional killings were reported until Aug. 1, when a woman was found dead in a suspected domestic violence incident. The previous record for the longest homicide-free stretch was 24 days in October 2016. The office also noted that July’s monthly homicide total excludes cases reclassified from previous years.

Other major crime categories have also declined, with burglaries down 14 %, grand larceny auto down 12.5 %, robberies down 10 % and reported hate crimes down more than 21 %. Reported rape is the only major crime category that has not declined this year, according to the report.

A record-breaking drop in deadly violence marked another milestone in Brooklyn’s ongoing public safety gains.
