Godzilla is ready to take a bite out of the Big Apple.<\/p>\n
Writer\/director Takashi Yamazaki\u2019s Godzilla Minus Zero will have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced. The King of Monsters will take over Alice Tully Hall on September 26, with Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew in attendance.<\/p>\n
Minus Zero is the eagerly anticipated sequel to Yamazaki\u2019s 2023 Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One<\/a>, hailed as\u00a0one of the best ever<\/a>\u00a0in the legendary franchise by many critics. Minus One\u00a0was the first domestic Japanese Godzilla film in seven years when it was released, taking viewers back to post-war Japan as the iconic kaiju surfaces from the ocean depths to unleash holy hell on a populace still reckoning with the ravages of World War II, a nation that was \u201cbaptized in the horrific power of the atom bomb\u201d as the film\u2019s press materials stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n When\u00a0Godzilla Minus One<\/a>\u00a0arrived on U.S. shores, the reviews glowed as brightly as the titan\u2019s atomic breath. \u201cThe result is nothing short of magical: a feast for the eyes, an entertaining epic in every sense of the word,\u201d wrote the\u00a0Washington\u00a0<\/a>Post\u2019<\/a>s\u00a0Lucas Trevor. \u201cGodzilla Minus One\u00a0isn\u2019t just a good\u00a0Godzilla\u00a0movie. It\u2019s an excellent\u00a0Godzilla\u00a0movie \u2013 arguably among the best ever to grace the screen,\u201d said\u00a0ReelViews<\/a>\u00a0James Berardinelli.<\/p>\n Minus Zero is set two years after the events of the previous film and follows the Shikishima family confronting new horrors. The synopsis reads: \u201cWar reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt is truly an honor to introduce our film to a global audience for the first time in a place of such history and prestige,\u201d said Yamazaki in a statement. \u201cI am filled with both awe and excitement to see how far the power of Japan\u2019s Godzilla can terrify audiences around the world, and whether they will resonate with what lies beyond that fear.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMore than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there\u2019s life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror,\u201d said Dennis Lim, NYFF artistic director. \u201cLike its predecessor, \u2018Godzilla Minus Zero\u2019 is a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year\u2019s NYFF Spotlight Gala.\u201d<\/p>\n Minus Zero will join many marquee films from esteemed directors, including James Gray\u2019s Paper Tiger, which will open the festival on September 25, and stars Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Miles Teller, and is centered on two brothers (Driver and Teller) whose pursuit of the American Dream gets dangerously derailed by the Russian mafia.
