The New York Police Department honored Lt. Joseph Bell on his final day in uniform, celebrating a career dedicated to public safety and traffic enforcement on Staten Island.

Bell, the commanding officer of Highway Unit 5 for the last 24 years, retired after 37 years of service, earning praise from colleagues who described him as an NYPD icon and a leader whose work helped make Staten Island’s roads safer.

Reflecting on his career, Bell said to News 4 he had “not one regret” and took pride in helping reduce traffic fatalities and achieving Vision Zero goals multiple times.

As he passed leadership to his successor, Lt. Miguel Estevez, Bell encouraged fellow officers to use their influence to help others, saying that doing so would lead to lasting success.

Officials also proclaimed the occasion “Lieutenant Joseph Bell Day” on Staten Island, recognizing his lasting impact on the borough and the NYPD.

The New York Police Department honored Lt.
