Those of us who remain are slightly luminous, occasionally irritable and still hopelessly devoted to this effervescent metropolis. We endure subway platforms, relentless sun and the indignities of humidity because New York offers something rare in return: room.

Reservations loosen. Sidewalks exhale. The Hudson catches the evening light with an extravagance no rooftop budget could manufacture. August becomes our private season, reserved for those who understand that luxury does not always require departure. Sometimes it means staying long enough for the city to reveal itself without the usual crowd pressing against the glass.

Little Island, rather perfectly, understands the arrangement.

Following two sold-out seasons, the sculptural park has returned with 56 performances featuring more than 200 artists across concerts, theatrical premieres, live radio, culinary experiments and DJ-fueled parties. Tickets for The Amph remain an admirably democratic $25, while programs in The Glade and gatherings at The Play Ground are free. Food, cocktails and the Hudson provide the finishing touches.

Sandbox Percussion

Perched above the water on enormous concrete tulips, Little Island resembles a fantasy conceived after a particularly inspired martini. Since opening in 2021, it has welcomed more than 7.5 million visitors and presented over 885 performances, transforming the remains of storm-damaged Pier 54 into one of New York’s most imaginative stages.

This week, Anthony Roth Costanzo takes on Minimalism with Sandbox Percussion, PUBLIQuartet, Vicky Chow, Bryan Wagorn and mezzo-soprano Rachael Wilson. Repetition can sound austere until the pulse catches and the structure begins to shimmer. Against the river at dusk, those accumulating patterns may feel less like a lesson in musical history than an elegant rearrangement of the nervous system.

From August 12 through 16, Cécile McLorin Salvant turns toward Tin Pan Alley, joined by Lillias White, Mikaela Bennett, Sullivan Fortner and other formidable guests. Salvant’s intelligence carries a little danger beneath its polish, making her an ideal guide through the seductions and historical complications of American popular song.

Nearby, Radiolab devotes an entire live program to grass. Yes, grass. Dirt cups and baked goods follow, proving that scholarship becomes far more charming when paired with dessert. Friday nights belong to Papi Juice, whose free parties make respectable plans and early bedtimes feel unnecessarily punitive.

Later in the month, Louis Cato summons the Savoy Ballroom through the music of the Harlem Renaissance. A free swing-dance celebration on August 22 returns the music to its proper condition: social, kinetic and entirely uninterested in sitting still. Ghetto Gastro’s Red Rice then traces a beloved dish across cultures and geographies, while Teranga serves jollof bowls rich with West African flavor. Food becomes archive, migration and memory, which is precisely how New York has always eaten best.

Anthony RothPhoto courtesy of Little Island

Late August becomes delightfully unhinged with Marina, the world-premiere underwater fairy tale from Julio Torres and Martine Gutierrez. Love, belonging and catfishing meet Lia Ouyang Rusli’s score, Ryan McNamara’s choreography and a cast including Spike Einbinder, Brandon Flynn and River L. Ramirez. The premise alone demands immediate attention—and perhaps waterproof mascara.

At The Glade, The Great Yogurt Feud investigates how a yogurt-obsessed nation lost the global branding battle to Greece. Frozen yogurt follows, naturally. Cultural history is often easiest to absorb when slightly tart.

The deeper luxury of Little Island lies in its refusal to separate culture from pleasure. Opera singers share the landscape with nightlife collectives. Food becomes scholarship, radio becomes theater and a public park becomes a salon with fresher air. One may arrive for a concert, wander into a culinary story, stay for a cocktail and notice Manhattan sparkling as the sun slips behind the river.

August is not New York’s dead season. It is the month the city quietly rewards its loyalists.

Little Island offers an ideal headquarters: music over water, art without stiffness, a dance floor within reach and enough breeze to preserve one’s dignity. Those of us who remain are not stranded. We are insiders, enjoying the brief privilege of a metropolis willing to share itself.

The complete season and ticket information are available at LittleIsland.org.

August has arrived, which means New York now belongs to the faithful.
