NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — The New York Road Runners announced updates to its membership offerings on Thursday, in an effort to improve access to year-round races.<\/p>\n
Updates include changes to the 9+1 program, which allows members to run the TCS New York City Marathon, and the Member Plus and Family Plus membership tiers.<\/p>\n
9+1 program updates:<\/p>\n
NYRR is introducing a free-to-enter member-only annual eligibility drawing in the 9+1 program.<\/p>\n
Members can enter the drawing from Sept. 17 to 29 and the drawing is Oct. 1.<\/p>\n
Members who are selected for the program must complete nine qualifying races and one qualifying volunteer opportunity through 2027 to receive entry to the 2028 TCS New York City Marathon.<\/p>\n
If selected in the eligibility drawing, runners will be charged $99 and become 9+1 Passholders.<\/p>\n
These updates will not impact members currently pursuing the 9+1 program to claim entry in the 2027 TCS New York City Marathon.<\/p>\n
“The hardest thing about completing 9+1 should be running the races-not getting into them,” said CEO Rob Simmelkjaer. “Over the past 24 months, we conducted an extensive audit and piloted several initiatives to address the overwhelming demand for our races, largely driven by the popularity of the TCS New York City Marathon and the success of our 9+1 program. Now, to ensure more local runners have access to our races year-round, we’ve updated our membership model and revamped 9+1. We look forward to introducing new benefits for all NYRR members over the coming year.”<\/p>\n
Member Plus updates:<\/p>\n
NYRR said they will also be eliminating its Member Plus tier to create a “more equitable and accessible registration experience for members.”<\/p>\n
From now on, all NYRR members will have access to advance registration for most non-drawing NYRR races. Members can register for non-drawing races two days earlier than the general public with the registration launch on Oct. 14.<\/p>\n
On Aug. 19, existing Individual Plus and Family Plus members will transition to the standard membership tier. They will receive a prorated refund.<\/p>\n
